OK Cush I'll send you down a whole jar full, as long as you only use them on weekends and not while driving.

The first aid info is still good
Compression bandages for snake and most spider bites except red backs.

The main reason is that the venom spreads via the lymphatic system and not the more pressurised veins and artery system. But the compression bandage should be over most of the limb not just the bite.

Generally, a red back bite isn't lethal.

Ummm , guy's , they can be lethal if they get enough venom into you , more so for smaller children as the amount of venom in an average bite is more than enough for their system . An adult might handle it better but it will still make you very sick if bitten and not treated . Basically , if you think you were bitten by a redback and in pain then head to the hospital asap . Ice will help reduce the pain but not slow the venom and as someone else said a pressure bandage won't slow it as it works differently to snake venom . Redbacks aren't to be taken lightly as some have indicated on this thread .

Just as an aside, it is only a week or so since we went to feed our kelpie dogs and found one highly excited and with a dead brown snake, still dripping blood, hanging out of her mouth.

Fortunately she got the snake without the snake getting a bite in. The average life span of a cat or a dog once they have been bitten by a brown snake is 30 minutes. We live more than that away from the nearest vet and thats provided we are on the spot when the bite happens.

We have already lost a couple of cats to snakes. Dead cat and dead snake lying beside it

so thats how a big a red back is?
growing up in africa we have the black widow also a tiny spider or button spider as we call them, usually about 50 families of them living in each house hold,
rules for surviving in africa,
if its smaller than your shoe stand on it.
if it has got thorns on it dont climb it (usually a tree)
if it doesnt have thorns then its poisonous stay away.
If its bigger than a normal size dog then you could be on the lunch menu.
last but not least, hang around with bigger fatter mates that way if you going to get chased, your safe.

Most of our lethals are fairly small - the red back is anyway. The funnel web spider is a bit bigger but they are that ugly that they get treated with respect.

The blue ringed octopus flashes bright colours at you before it bites. The sharks are a bit sneaky - they just rush in and grab what they want. The box jellyfish just drifts around waiting fo some one to swim into their tenticles. Deadly pufferfish - well we just export those to japan.

Snakes- well we have seven of the worlds top ten deadliest but unless you tread on one or try to catch it or pick up a snake to kill a stick, you are fairly safe.

Carby cleaner - well mostly if you are that close to any of the above its time to reconsider your religious options.

I left out dingos and mini killing wombats. They made movies and mini series about them.

Move to NZ: White tailed spiders can give you a septic bite, Katipo spiders aren't great but never heard of someone being bitten or dying. And that's it. Plus the weather's great, not too warm.
