Move to NZ: White tailed spiders can give you a septic bite, Katipo spiders aren't great but never heard of someone being bitten or dying. And that's it. Plus the weather's great, not too warm.
ha ha, we also have those in africa except we azlso have lions, big cats, hippos which kill more people than any other animal in the world, aslo crocs like yours.
plus we have big gorrillas armed with AK47's that if they like your car they will just kill you and take it.

africa is worse i tell you.lol

kiwis get a fright when they see a spider and freak out, nothing to hurt or kill you here it just makes them a little soft around the edges.

From Australian Museum Online.

Toxicity
Redback bites occur frequently, particularly over the summer months. More than 250 cases receive antivenom each year, with several milder envenomations probably going unreported. Only the female bite is dangerous. They can cause serious illness and have caused deaths. However, since Redback Spiders rarely leave their webs, humans are not likely to be bitten unless a body part such as a hand is put directly into the web, and because of their small jaws many bites are ineffective. The venom acts directly on the nerves, resulting in release and subsequent depletion of neurotransmitters.
Common early symptoms are pain (which can become severe), sweating (always including local sweating at bite site), muscular weakness, nausea and vomiting. Antivenom is available. No deaths have occurred since its introduction.
First Aid
Apply an ice pack to the bitten area to relieve pain. Do not apply a pressure bandage (venom movement is slow and pressure worsens pain). Collect the spider for positive identification. Seek medical attention. St John Ambulance Emergency First Aid pages

Jai

It beats me how a community who can barely afford food or clothes can buy a number of AK's at what ?? roughly $500 each.

I know that governments buy them as well but with what ???
As a vietnam veteran, I shudder when I see undisciplined masses waving a firing these Ak's anywhere and everywhere. What goes up must come down and with enough terminal velocity to do damage to the lucky person standing there as the bullet comes down

I would have thought they were easy enough to identify

Mainly to identify male to female since the female is the dangerous one ( ) but also for the amount of people who'll take in a daddy long legs thinking it's a very thin or underdeveloped red back (don't laugh , it does happen) . As I said in an earlier post though , they can be lethal , particularly to smaller body mass people and children . If you you've been bitten by one and the bite site is in pain go to the hospital and get treatment .

Was watching Quantam a little while back on our ABC, it seems our little friends the white tails have been stomped on unfairly. They are the victim of an urban myth, the skin injuries they are meant to give are actually from a range of household spiders and not them. It's related more to poor hygeine on the bite you can get from any household spider, all you need to do is wash and care for it early on they reckon.

So the male and female have redbacks ? I thought it was just the female

I was surprised to be told the daddy long legs has the most potent venom of all? but it just doesn't have the fangs to deliver it, to humans anyway. Gives me a whole new respect for those little guys.

Males are smaller, lighter in colour with a much lighter (usually orange) stripe

thought i would let you know that AK47's you can get for R100 thats about $20 can also get a 9mm parabelum for about the same price, they come thru the north afican borders and filter down into southern africa, saying about that the the limpopo river and the zambesi river also kill more migrating people than anywhere else in the world but its not talked about due to the crocodiles and hippos killing them when they try bring guns etc and smuggle across the border.

p.s im not getting into a political discussion over who buys them adn what they can afford as the rule of africa is the bigger the gun the more food we get tonight.
funny tho they never hold up KFC and just rob the chickens

will have to watch mythbusters.
