Excellent work holmes! Yer i have seen both seasons many times, i'm actually watching "The Nightmare of Milky Joe" as I type. It's probably the best episode, although all episodes are "genius". Imagine that...

Back on to topic now... After a 10min drive the brand new plugs are now completely black with soot.

The mixture seemed to be fine when I tested it with the piston push button thing, it revved higher for about a second then went back to idle on both carbs.

Could it be the needles in the carbs which make it so rich? I dont think its the spark plugs because this has happened to two different sets of plugs, plus I got them from a mini shop so they should have the right heat rating.

Using the lift pin only checks the mixture at idle, you are going to find out what needles the carbs have in them and make sure you have the right ones for your engine setup, it sounds like you have the wrong ones if it is running that rich

I have taken the carbs apart and found the type of needles. They are "M" types, which are standard for a cooper S. My car is not a cooper s though, it is a 1275. The manual tells me that the the standard is something else and that M could be chosen for a richer needle. Would this cause the mixture to be so rich that it fouls the plugs up severely in 10mins?
