Brett,
All the (old) autos were 3.26:1 diff ratio, but the undergeared drop gears made it 3.76:1 overall from motor to wheels. same an a M850-Cooper 997-998, - Mini Deluxe was.

didn't the 850 have a 4.1?

4.1 was used in Moke, never 850.
850s were all 3.765.

I've tired a few and always come back to the 3.44 on 10 inch wheels. Nice compromise between acceleration and cruising and it's what the original Cooper S came with (in the vast majority of cases).

I agree , I've had various diffs but always 10" wheels and found the 3.44 the best trade off of all involved , still reasonable acceleration without screaming it's nut off at 110 .

Guy's there is negligable difference between 10" 12" and 13" wheel/tire combo's, they are all around 500mm diameter..

I like the 3.44, but now I like the 3.647 better. It suits my lumpier 282 cam, I can still run it down to 60KMH in 4th- and it gets on cam at 70KMH. 8)
OK so it's doing near 5,000 at 75MPH, but I don't do much freeway work.

3.44 is great for tearing around... but as i've said, because I do heaps of HWY/FWY stuff, it doesn't quite cut it.

With a national max speed limit of 110KMH here in the land of Oz, I don't see anything wrong with a 3.44.
It's not as though you are going to run out of RPM...
The taller you gear it the more it will knock overall performance about.

A 5 speed box would be nice- but without exception, they are all crap for longevity, including the last as fitted to Sportspacks.

Hmmm... lets go graft an A series onto a Suzuki GTI box or something... 8)
