way back when it was included in our rego cost's it was cheap to register the car then it was deregulated and private insurers got into it and the cost of rego nearly dbled over night cos of the greedy pricks
makka

If you want more specifics Makka, CTP (as part of NSW rego) was $40.15/yr, every year from dot, until Neville Wran got into power.
Then it went up, every year.
Mine was under $300 this year,so guess I shouldn't complain.:)

What exactly does the TAC charge cover ?
If i have fully comp insurance am I covered twice somewhere.

Transport Accident Commission - pays for medical costs of people injured in accidents, so you're not paying twice, car insurance doesn't pay medical bills, and private health insurance would fight tooth and nail not to pay for car accident rehab

And don't forget makka , when they deregulated the system , it was so that the competition would make the prices cheaper ....... All it's done is given them turns at charging higher amounts so you think you've got a bargain at $360 rather than $450 the other company wanted to charge ......

Thanks adeee the TAC seems cheaper in Vic as you say.
What happens if someone runs into me who has'nt got any :?:
Does it mean my insurance pays and they try to recover the cost

Nope - all it does is protect you from having to chase up the driver at fault for your medical costs, compensation etc if youre seriously injured in a car accident. This is necessarily very limited cover and the exact conditions, level of cover, when it applies, what it includes etc are fairly rigidly defined and controled by legislation. Its really just there to protect drivers from devastating costs when injured on the road when the other party is at fault, plus protect individuals from devastating injury compensation payouts and protect the state from carrying individuals rehabilitation costs and such.
