On the topic of suspension. Is that you selling the hyrdo set up on the MOCQ site? If it is why are you selling it? Won't you need some subframes? Are you selling them because you think wets can't be converted to dry? Maybe some of the bolt on bits differ but I believe they are the 'same', structurally. I could be wrong, and I could be jumping to a huge conclusion thinking its you selling them.

not that i am aware of  i asked them to put an ad up for "WANTED: dry subframes in ok condition"...i am gonna be using my wet front subby for making my jig...so i had no immediate plans for selling it...stupid MOCQ...

Insomnia,
You may be able to buy the coil springs from Glen Carpenter. He got a complete set from a Rover imported from Japan. Only got the rears recently so he may still have the whole set.

If you are modifying the sub frame (of course) I reckon the best option is to copy the excellent work of Con Torisi on GTI_mini's car (the yellow one in Perth). That car used the modern lower arm adjustment method of an eccentric pin. It is easy to cut the adjusters from a car at the wreckers and adapt it to the location where the lower arm mounts in the sub frame. Con's set-up used standard lower arms but had heaps of adjustment for frame inaccuracies and selection of optimum camber. I have photos I can send if my explanation is too crap.

yes pics would be brilliant :) thanks!

Ina,

Good setup.

I have read a few good reports from guys in the UK who are using them.

Add to this that there are different srping rates available, al progressive, should see a very flexible setup.

Make sure you get the best shocks you can afford and make sure they are adjustable for compression (some are adjustable for compression, rebound and damping)

Cheers,
Andrew

oh ok :) thanks for the advice...i basically wanna spend no more than $2000 on FRONT-END suspension...i really think this is an area i DONT wanna cheap out on...so if it ends up costing a bit more than most would wanna spend i feel its worth it if i get handling and durability beyond that of the standard fare...

what shocks would you recommend? as i said i havent really considered the rear yet...figured i'd sort out the front then tackle the back :)

If your going performance don't go Koni Sports. Great shock if you a just doing spirited driving but with the Starlet turbo I found them a little wishy washy and they aren't adjustable for compression only rebound (which well nigh useless really).

My 2c.

Matt

yeah i've not heard many good things about koni...i will mainly be using this car on the road...but i want something that is fully race capable (as track days are things i wanna get into eventually)...i am not building it as a daily driver but more of a street terrorizing weekend fun car...hence ride comfort isnt a must...but performance is...

what are people's thoughts on Spax? i've heard they are pretty good...spax seem to think they are pretty good...but then all companies say they are the best :P

I have blue coil spring and spax shocks in my clubman. But I haven't got the mini on the road so can't let you know what they are like. I would think the red ones would be better for road and the track. I hope this works http://www.minimania.com/web/threadid/7 ... thread.cfm

I reacon that if you were keen you could make a macpherson strut front without too much trouble......? You would need to mod the body to suit tho... you could use your starlet struts perhaps? measure and see...

Hi Ina,

I dont particularly like Spax - red or yellow.

If it were up to me I would definitely purchase:
1. Gas charged, particularly nitrogen with remote reservior
2. European, De Carbon, Bilstein and Ohlins (my personal favourite)
3. Fully adjustable for compression, damping and rebound

Shocks are the most important suspension component - dont skimp here for a track car.

My $0.02

Andrew

Yeah Ohlins would be brillliant but the cost is astronomical. I remember having them on my bike and just a curiosity I enquired about the rear one, $1450 and that was in the mid to late 90's!

Here are photos of Con's design front lower arm adjuster. Simple and effective. These eccentric bolts are in just about every modern car. Most have another disc piece attached to the main circular part. This is saw tooth and there is a small locking bit that engages the saw teeth to stop the whole lot moving if the main bolt comes loose.
I remember them being on the back end of my mates 1985 Corrolla, so they would be cheap at the wreckers. Leaves more $$$ for the Ohlins, Penskes etc...

hmmm interesting...i've been in search of customer reviews of these for a while...thanks for the low down :)

they seem to think reds up front are the way to go...i am building a (very) fast road mini so it might be better to go red rather than blue...not sure though...i think i need some professional advice :S
