Hi All,

This Mini is for sale on ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com.au/MORRIS-MINI-1966 ... dZViewItem

The owner has advised there is no id tag (i assume its a compliance plate he means), there is no rego papers and no body number but he can supply the "old vehicle number". He has a receipt of sale.

Whilst its on old car, I don't want to buy something that is a risk to register (potentially iffy body number) or is potentially stolen. Help!!!! :?

If it was missing the tag or id plate but had a body number then I would say it's no big deal really but to be missing the body number as well I'd say steer clear of it . Every mini produced here or in England should have a body number (I know someone will argue with me , the new Heritage bodies from ENgland apparently don't have body numbers but even "spare bodies" from BMC in the 60's had numbers) . Maybe the seller just hasn't seen it because of thick paint (being optomistic here) but there should be a number of some form on either the firewall or the radiator panel/shroud .

I guess you just have to assess the risk that it may be stolen and act accordingly. The (NSW) police seem to only check engine numbers.

When I took my (unregistered) Traveler in to be checked they looked at the chassis number anb rejected it (on a detachable plate), I suggested the commission number - rejected (the bonnet slam panel is removable (on my car)) and eventaully they settled on the "FE" number.

So I guess (in NSW ) it doesn't matter what or where the number is (or who stuck it there) as long its permantly attached to the shell. I've registered several cars with no previous history (found under a woodheap etc) and, while it may have taken a little patience, has proved to be no big deal.

Cheers, Ian

In NSW I've found the Blueslip inspectors mostly rely on the radiator shroud number lately, probably because that's the actual body number on a Clubby and they assume it's the same deal for a roundy.

Are you both sure you have all the history of the cars they came off , seen someone fit a "good" plate to a car they had rebuilt only to find it had been reported stolen in the mid 60's interstate . It was registerred in NSW for several years in the 70's but the states didn't seem to talk to each other as well then and it was missed . The body rusted out so they thought it was safe and someone wouldn't turn up with a car with the same body number . It was looking nasty for a while as he had a choice of admitting he'd put a different identity onto a car and getting a big fine , or losing the car to the insurance company who paid out on it originally . Do a Rev's check and a police check on them , treat them like a full car .

I've also heard that happen, after a guy spent $20 000 restoring the car. However the new / old owner was happy.

Mattywood,

That car has been deseamed to which I think could be a registration issue as I think engineers certifcates are required. This is just my limited knowledge though but I'm sure I've read posts about it on ausmini.

the car seams to have a early ( pre 64 ) front on it so i would say that it is not a 66 model car. it has not had the front lower corners cut away. but even then you never know if this this car was in an accident, they put an early front end on it and at the same time. took the lovely little seams off it. if it is a 66 car, the appearance of such an early front panel to me suggests that it has been in an accident. it has got wind up doors though. not that they cant be changed! steer clear of this car IMO

Oh my Gawd..... im 99% sure this was my first car.

I bought it ....oooohh.....about 20 years ago, a grey 1100 deluxe, 1967 model with a ton of panel damage.... $200 seemed a good price at the time. My dad deseamed it, every seam possible was mig welded from the inside before anyhing was cut off, we left the gutter, cut the hole for the RH tank. The telltale thing would be the boot hinges, I made internal ones that really cleaned up the back. I painted it red with a white roof, gave it a black mesh grill, fitted contessas, hotted up the 1100 and fitted shockers to the front (as it was a hydro car). The black interior came from an unregistered homemade convertible dumped in the bushes along the monash freeway.
I took the contessas off it when I sold it (they went on the '64 I did up for my wife), and put wheels on it exactly like the ones in the photo.... can't be too many painted like that. I also removed the woodrim MaxRob steering wheel and filtted a crappy sports wheel, just like the one in the photo.
I had 1small prang in it, and it looks like the passenger side of the bonnet is still bent in the same place. It was bought by a guy from Hamton Park, not a million miles from Narre Warren.

Tonight I'll post some photos of it when I had it.

It's just got to be the same car.

The new heritage body shell dont have any numbers because they are being sold only to reshell old cars. In britain you can change your shell if you want, you dont even have to mark on the rego doc's that you have done it. It only become a problem when you respray, as the police use the rego for car checks, had that problem once
"is this you car sir...why does the document say its blue when its green..."
The rules state that a long as you are changing like with like ther are no problems, so you could just build a brand new mk2 with all new everything and then stick your old plates on it.
if you had the money that is!

Unlike UK, here in Oz the body and its number is sacred- they take a dim view if you put the plates on another shell, and accuse you of rebirthing. :?
