I've got a mate who has said... "You supply the paint and i'll paint it for a carton"

Good stuff... but..i've got questions..

Are there special automotive paint suppliers or is it the same shizzle from, say, a solver centre?

And what brands are there?

What's good?

How much can I expect to pay?

How long will paint last in a tin? (Can i buy it now and then paint once the body is finished?)

This is really one of those deals where you do get what you pay for , and since the spraying is costing you 3/10ths of F**K all then get some decent paint . I'm biassed towards PPG from what I've seen , plus a mate's a panel beater/spray painter who's also been a rep for PPG and he refuses to use anything else . Also , I've heard from several people they have the correct codes for the various forms of the BMC colours so if you're doing Astro in his original colour then they'd be the go .

I've been googling it and it turns out that PPG bought dulux's car paint business a while back and they have a searchable list by manufacturer.

however, 1964 +- 3 years doesn't turn up astro grey for either Austin Rover Group or BMC... bugger..

there is, however a HUGE amount of colours that they do have.. 81 results for 1964...

I'm a fan of Concept Paints Hi fill primer in the 2pack variety as a base, and I have used concept top coat in the 2K aswell, and been very happy. I recently did a Valliant in Wattyl colorthane 2K (with concept hi-fill base) and it went on well, although it didnt quite give the shine that oither 2K's do, but i hear its coz its more an industrial type of paint, and harder than the soviet sausage

The key to a good paint job is definatly good body work and buying good paint. I've painted with both cheap and expensive paint and I would happily shell out a few hundred extra for the good paint. It's nicer to paint with and it comes out way nicer. I would definately recommend PPG paint.

I did a quick search for the paint code and came up with this.

See if your PPG supplier can work with this code, if not take a sample to them and get them to use their computer to take a scan and match it then do a custom blend for you.

Don't laugh , I fronted up to a paint place a few years ago and asked could they match an existing car colour that wasn't on the books (South African mini Vanden Plas , most books didn't even acknowledge the car existed let alone a colour code) . They said they could but could only do it if I could bring in a part in the colour that was small enough to fit in the shop . I said I'd be back in a minute as I had the bonnet sitting in the back seat of my car . I went out and found the enitre staff peering through the shop windows to see what car I could fit a bonnet into the back of , "Oh , we thought you meant something the size of a holden's bonnet " was the following comment .
Anyway , when you do get the paint sorted out , make sure you keep a record of the mix they did for future use .

i've heard dupont make great paint but not sure of cost. concept paint i think costs about $140 for 4L colour, about the same for primer as well. thats acrylic though. 2pak cost heaps more.

I just bought 4L of Concept's 2 pack Jet Red, 4L of their 2 pack hi-fill, 4L of thinners, and 2L of 2 pack hardener.
All up it cost me $543 from VG Auto Paints in Girraween..

They had the paint code for Jet Red, no problem.

hey doc, how did it cost that much? i got a quote for 2pak primer with hardner(4l primer 2l hardner) 4L acrylic colour, all for 275. (all concept paint). thinners doesn't cost much. $20 for 4L.
