the ignition leads are on right... i checked that....

it just seems that either the engine is not getting any/or enough fuel or no spark

Well , check and see if it has fuel to the carb as people have said , pull the fuel hose off the carb and have someone crank the motor over and see if it comes out the pipe . Probably even loosen the hose clamp on the fuel hose where it goes onto the carb and see if it seeps out when cranked , if not then take it off and look but only get them to crank it for a short turn , don't want too much fuel in the engine bay . If fuel spurts out then check to see if it has spark , we can't advise you on what could be faulty unless we know what's not working .

WHat spare's do you have sitting around for the electrics ? If you have another coil then try it , check the gap in the points , take the cap off and have someone crank the engine to see if the points are opening and if there is a spark visible . Have you recently replaced anything other than the ign barrel ?

Old mechanic once said to me "if it wont start, 90% chance that it's something electrical and 90% chance that it's the points".

Mind you, we're all wiser with hind-sight.

I bet she'll roar into life for you :) with new points installed provided you didn't move the distributor.

See ya

Did you by any chance replace the coil recently before with one that had a condenser type thing bolted on the top of it ?

G'Day,
If you can measure the current in the coil then you can test if the points are actually switching. I have seen times when the points were not installed correctly and were shorting permanently to ground because one insulating washer was incorrect where the (-) lead from the coil was bolted to its terminal on the points. Attach your multimeter (set to 10 Amps) between your coil (-) terminal and the lead going to your points. It should read up to about 8 amps if the points are closed. Rotate the crankshaft by grabbing and moving the fan belt until you see the points open up, the current should now drop to zero. BTW, the coil should have its (+) terminal connected to 12 volts, If the polarity is around the other way it will still work but the internal high voltage reference is now tied to the (+) and not the body ground (0 volts) and because of the way the high voltage coil is wound will overstress it internally which will eventually break down the insulation - causing shorted turns, and crook spark.

I have been known to forget to install the rotor arm out when I change the points...
