interesting to see a SA engine, has the thin web like our MK1 and seems to suffer the same fate if you rev it to hard, had a 66 ex Bathurst car that had a motor that looked pretty much the same as yours, not quite as big as far as the new viewing hole goes but same result, crank broken in middle only bits I saved were like you, carbs ,exhaust, head (even though it had been hit hard it was ok) diff and water pump

Did you have a centre strap on it always pays when using thin web blocks

sorry mate

Jon

 I've never seen an A series that bad,
not like the Mazda B diesels - the rod sticking through the side of the block is the factory indicator that the motor is getting tired (done 3 blocks so far)

not much any good form it, like the flywheel was good and the diff (which is competiion bushed diff pin etc) other than that nothing, even the cam took a hard enough knock to bend it (you can see it with your eye how bad its bent).
I have to say its terminal.

Reminds me of the one Chong bought cheap that had thrown a rod after a big end bolt went. Smaller hole though!
All we salvaged out of that one was 3 S rods and the oil pump (still mint!).
Oh and the gearset was still fine, casing was toast though.

smashed some teeth of the gears fomr when it decided to stop the motor instantly, also broke the double row bearings, yep casing is toast.
I havent cracked open the turbo oil pump yet but will do when i get round to it.
head tooak a good smack, push rods bent, i guess that 2 rods are ok and the pistons would be good, 2 end pistons have broken away at the base thru the gudgeon pins, wher the crank took a twist. The timing chain and gears puled thru the housing (well tried to)cam chain tensioner rooted, side cover even got bnt, the harmonic balancer where the belt runs is twisted. The bell housing cover has taken a bit of a strain due to the gears stopping so suddenly, the flywheel locating washer has twsited the locator tangs.
the carb was his, dizzy was his, alternator was his everything else was mine.
I get the broken bits.

all i can say is make sure timing is correct, air fuel mixture and no detonation/pinking or you could end up with this. Graham russel said it could be harmonics, Keith said could be the angle of the bearing cut. I personally think its just plain supidity on my behalf for lending him my good motor.
But i honestly didnt think he would break it as it had been driven hard before and stripped down and rebearinged inbetween transplants and crack tested when it was rebuilt.

yeah the hole measures 16cm wide X 23cm high is you take the bit thats hanging on the side of the gear box off.

beat that.

Holy crap man, i cant say i've ever seen anything that bad before... You have to wonder what sort of noises it was making just before the crank made a bid for freedom.

Some people just have no idea or mechanical sympathy. My bet? A good ol' style over-rev. Around 9000+rpm will do that

My condolences to your motor and your pocket...

Doc I hate jumping to conclusions here but would half a tub of Araldite plus some tape and a lick of paint help here? Oh and some Barsleaks. :)

Mike,
I've seen 202 Holden block `conrod' holes fixed in Hong Kong with a bit of hand beaten brass sheet, screws and Stag sealant.. but I think this one is a little beyond that.
