Hey mini lovers

I have saved up around 2k to go bezerk on Red Ed. Ive been thinkin bout an engine rebuild, extractors, sports exhaust and superchargin him.
Ive got a 76 clubman and its got in it an 998cc. In reasonable nick.
Im looking to give Ed more grunt than anything else.
Any suggestions would be great!

For all the WA'ers if they could point me in the direction of some places i could go for cheap/good services that would be great!

You would get more HP per dollar by getting a standard 1275 instead of supercharging the 998. Its not just a case of bolting on a blower and away you go..... your distributor will need modifying, your cam will be wrong, the head will be ineffiicient, you'll need to dynotune it to get the mixtures correct, and you'll NEED to get disc brakes if you dont already have em....

An engine rebuild will cost you a fair whack of that 2G anyway (a modified head for supercharging will be at least a grand) so why not put that money towards a 1275 and disc brakes, then maybe look to supercharge THAT later....

Dont get me wrong here, you CAN bolt a supercharger onto a semi-stock 998 motor, but it wont work well at all, and a guy with a 1275 will still probably drive straight by.

(the SC kit ive got cost about $1100, plus $1000 on head work...... plus cam $150ish, plus distributor $120, plus carby $200ish, plus extractors $150ish, plus engine rebuild $1500+, plus high lift rockers $300, plus oil cooler $200, plus second radiator and plumbing $50, plus plus plus........)

2 Grand to spend I'd look at Disc Brakes first, maybe exhaust/extractors - then if you can stretch what's left maybe a better carby or some head work? You won't get even close to a rebuild unless you do the whole lot yourself - and even just a set of pistons/bearings/rings/gaskets will probably blow the rest of the budget!!

I'd be doing everything to prepare for getting a more powerful engine later on. Do the brakes - possibly look at suspension upgrade - anything that will help when you do have the money for a 1275 or a highly worked small bore.

My 2cents (from someone who's done things in the wrong order and wishes he had his time over  )

I'd also add that if that 2k is stretching the budget even remotely, i'd hold onto it for when the thing does break  if it ain't broke don't fix it..otherwise you won't like your mini very much at all when it decided to break on you after you just spent 2k on it..

Putting disk brakes on my car was the best thing i ever did.

I see your Red Clubby around the steets quiet a lot-Which means it is your "daily drive car".
So I agree with with Mini Mad-your 2k definitely want go very far.Start looking around and asking if anyone has disc brakes and 1275 for sale.Go and speak to Al Munday, there is a bloke down there that is doing the same exercise,he just brought a 1275LS(wrecked).I think it cost him $1200.00 for the wreck and Al Munday has transferred the brakes and 1275 engine into his other mini.He will be able to tell you how much dollars you will need.
Keep saving your money........

Hey, I was just checkin out ur site on car domain, did u buy your blower as a complete kit? I know link automotive used to sell the opcon autorotors as a kit.

Serioulsly was it much stuffing around to get it all to go down? Do u know ur approx comp ratio? Wat have u done to ur cv's, diff, gearbox, primary/idler/input gears? Are they still standard?

Cheers

I think you should definately fit some big brakes to it, put on the biggest brakes you can then you will be set for whatever future power mods you do. My brake upgrade wais some of the best money that I have invested in my Mini. Having good brakes is nearly as fun as having lots of power. You can drive more aggressively and not be concerned about stopping. Let us all know what you decide to do to your car.

Definately keep an eye out for a pre-loved pre-modified mini.... there are many bargains out there if you eyes peeled.

for example:
I bought my flip-fronted mini after willy saw it in his suburb with For Sale signs in the windows. The guy wanted about 5 grand for the car, it had a fresh 1310 motor with 45DCOE weber and the shell was straight, rust free, and had clean paint.

I said to the guy "it is honestly worth about $3000 to me, sorry to waste your time"...... and he said "if you put another $100 on top, its yours"

The ones with the signs in the windows are usually easier to bargain with. Offer 2000 cash for one thats got 3000 on the sign and you may just get it.

OR put a sign in your window: "WANTED, 1275 with disc brakes, call 041........."

When I said "the kit cost $1100ish", I meant: I bought the SC12 blower for $200, and I bought the fitting kit as per the first picture in this link for $850.... It is ONLY a fitting kit, not a complete engine upgrade, which is why I listed all the other costs involved. Still less $$$ than the Link setup.

Lots of stuffing around? Yes. Exhaust manifold needs modifying.... manifold nuts are VERY hard to get to.... bonnet needs modifying...... etc etc

Never completed the engine build, i've only trial fitted it, so I can't tell you anything other than:
-Compression will be about 8.5:1 simply by enlarging the head's chambers and using dished pistons.
-Std Rover pot joints will be used.
-Diff will be either 3.1:1 or 2.9:1 (from a Rover)
-Transfer and layshaft gears will be standard helicals. If they break , i'll upgrade 'em later.

Its being built to be driven in the hills, not for circuit racing. Just seeking alot of torque for exiting corners  The most damage is done when trying to rush the gear changes....
