hey all,

last weekend I found I had a cracked head (after hours and hours spent mucking around with my cooling system). I have another head which I put on this morning. I turned the car over and.......no fire. It turns over fine, just wont fire up. I checked my dizzy, plugs and leads and stuff and they are all ok.

I put back on the old head coz I assumed it was the new head and not something I have done wrong. It does the same thing dammit.

So I have to assume I have done something wrong

I followed the trusty gregorys manual to the letter!

What could I have done to cause it not to fire? It did backfire a couple of times after 5 mins of turning it over but that is all.

Charging the battery now while my frustration ebbs......

Did you put in a new head gasket? they are pretty much one time use only, Torque down once and they are done. If you take the head off again means new gasket otherwise you are looking at long term problems (or short term depending on your luck!)

Not sure why it isn't firing...? no compression? is there a spark? did you put the rockers on correctly and checked the vave lash? Did you put the manifolds on correctly? New manifold gasket would be an good idea. Is the carb put back properly and hooked up?

Good luck

Its probably not cause of the head.. Sounds like theres no fuel?? If you're sure you have fuel check to make sure the carbys are fine.. pour a bit of petrol down them to see if that'll help start them..

I didn't get a new head gasket, I thought it would be fine-will get a new one. There is fuel in the float bowl and the front is up on ramps, where do I squirt/pour some fuel? apart from the head itself, nothing at all was changed

thanks so far

Did you adjust the valves- you cannot just rip a head off and bung another on without checking all the rocker clearances.
I bet a few have nil clearance = valve held open = no compression...

thank doc, I will check that. That doesn't explain why the one I took off the day before didn't work though when I put it back on :?

It does explain it if you didn't adjust the rocker clearances on it??

If you take a head off and put it straight back on you still have to adjust the clearances..
