Im just starting to get my car (60's mini saloon) on the road (unregistered at the moment)
I was driving around the block to test that all things are running fine and all of a sudden I couldnt change gears.

I got the car home (as I was only a couple of hundred metres from my driveway) but since then when I start it I cant change into reverse or any other gear.

If the motor is off I can change through the gears.
When I try to change gears when the motor is running I get a bad crunch.

When I press the clutch in, the slave cylinder shaft moves.

My brother-in-law thinks it could be the pressure plate or the clutch plate.. Ive got no idea.

The other thing is, if it is one of those things roughly how much could it cost to repair

if you want to check that it is a hydraulic problem, take one large piece of pipe, or a crow bar, trrolly jack handle. put car in gear on flat ground, handbrake off. put the bar between the cluch arm and the flywheel housing and lever the arm out while pushing on the front of the car with your leg(or get a helper) if the car moves, your slave isint pushing far enough, which means hyduralic problem, check flexable hose first as this is cheep and they do doteriate and cause issues(i found out the hard way by replacing slave and master, only to find the hose was the issue)

get a mate to put his foot on the clutch and keep it down while you watch if the arm stays out or slowly sinks back in while the clutch is still pressed.

Get a manual, and set the clutch first. Also do as above and check the hydraulics.

good luck,

(oh, and a clutch kit is around $100, or 140 for cooper s, and it is worth the extra money for the heavy duty bearing)

Do it yourself, it is a great way to learn 8)

Cheers
Matt

Great! I have a few things to look at now.

I do like to do stuff myself so I might try them out over this week.

Thank you very much for all the replies.

As always this forum never disappoints!

Regards,

Jason
