so i finally changed my starter the other day, and i thought while i'm in here, ill do my plugs and points. so i did. the points were barely opening, and the plugs were heavily carboned, which just rubbed off with my fingers (i used my fingers to rub it off, not it came off along with my fingers...)

so i cleaned them up and reset the correct gaps. now it runs better obviously, but before i did them i was on idle about 1000rpm, but after it was 1500. then after driving for a while today it was up around 2000. i turned doen the mixture a little, its on around 1100-1200.

but i have felt a significant increase in power??? why??? just because i'm sparking better and so on?

I kinda do and don't know the answer, and am not going to attempt to answer it cos i don't know enough about it.

well as you have said it is due to the extra spark.

When you think about the tiny size of points and the tiny gap that they
open up to, any change to poorly adjusted and poor conition points will
make a big difference. Having a good spark will make an awesome difference
to the way your car runs. It was probably only getting about half a poor spark
before and now its getting a much bigger spark.... from bnoth the plugs and
the points..

Maybe he finally put a turbo rotory in it??

Points are amazing. They do what they do while they are doing it.

But worn points do bad things to timing. They open at different points changing the timing.

You must have been adjusting the idle mixture to compensate for bad points for a while and now you have ignition right it is too rich or just too much fuel.

A car running better has more power.......

yeah i have been adjusting the fuel mixture for ages, trying to get it right. i actually had a few issues with it cutting out on idle, silly me just changed the fuel mix instead of checking my electrics

Silly you nothing dude. I've done it myself. How do you think I found out how important points are to timing.

I hope and plan to have my next project to have electronic ignition so i don't have that issue. So many other issues to have why have that one again.

if your points gap was correct when it the points were first put in, then the plastic wears down, the points are opening later, so the timing is retarded....

if the plugs are heavily sooted up, not only will the spark have a hard time finding part of the electrode to jump to, the fuel in the combustion chamber isn't exposed to the spark to be exploded.

Also, if your plugs are getting very sooty, your mixture is rich, so there isn't enough air in the mixture to burn all of the fuel properly

Check your timing. Changing the amount your points open will affect it.

But someone may have compensated for the bad points/timing by bumping the idle stop up.

ok so in light of this new information, i decided to clean out my points.

firstly i noted that all the points had this white powedered residue stuff which wat is supposed to be cleaned i guess, but out of the four points one was as clean as a whistle and the other four were dirty..... any ideas?

secondly i reatached them all and started him up and the engine is rumbling alot more than usual and as i accelerate it seems like it will stall...any ideas?

You will only have one set of points I think you mean spark plugs All you spark plugs should be pretty much the same if one is different it may mean that that cylinder is not firing properly for whatever reason. I would just put new spark plugs and points in it, they don't cost much and then you know they are OK.

Your points are inside your distributor, check your points gap is correct (check a manual), while your there you should also check your spark plug leads and the lead coming from the coil (sorry can't remember what the resistance they are supposed to be ) you'll need a multimeter for this. Also you could check your timing you will need a timing light for this should be 5 degrees Before Top Dead Centre the degrees are marked on the flywheel you can peek at them through a little hole in the clutch housing a mirror will help here.

If all of that doesn't help then you will have to look further...

the spark plug leads coming fromt he coil, thats wat i cleaned and thats all i touched and its sounds as though its gonna s@#$ itself its vibrating very hard, will do sparkys this weekend
