Yup.........Got in the car the other day and the petrol gauge wasn't working. Seems to be 'THE' thing at the moment as several other ausmini'ers seem to be suffering the same hassle.

I've sent 12 volts up the 2 wires and the gauge works, so the problem must therefore be the sender unit. I've taken a Falcon one apart before but never a Mini.

Any help/thoughts would be appreciated.......thanks folks

I yea, i drove a fair distance 'spiritedly' the other day and when i wasn't too far from home i looked at my fuel guage and it was lower than i had ever seen it before

So i kept going past my house to the closest servo without stopping and proceeded to fill 'er up. The mini didn't take much fuel, so i then gathered that the problem was elsewhere..

Looked in the boot and one of the wires had come off the sender cause of some stuff i had in the boot. Wire back on and presto..i have fuel.

Rod, I fixed the one in my van. Basically, the wire that connects the coil up to the terminals is the same wire the coil is made of, SO VERY THIN! Mine had broken, so replaced it with a nice thick one. Get some wire and take the insulation off it and solder it to the coil (as close to the bottom as possible) and to the inside of the terminal.

Not sure how accurate it is reading, havn't driven more than a tank full yet. It read over the top when full, and is reading about 1/3 at the moment.

Something I could try if I find that it isn't reading correctly is put a resistor inline somewhere. Because it's soldered onto the coil and because it's using a bigger bit of wire, the resistance will be less than normal, so if it isn't reading right, put a resistor in and bobs ya uncle!

Van senders are even more expensive than sedan ones to buy new, but i'd find out how much a brand new one would be, then sum up whether it's worth replacing or fixing.

I feel compelled to slap a comment about British wiring here because it causes soo much heartache in any british car. But I will refrain from commenting on how they could build cool cars like the mini. but couldn't wire up a house well let alone a car. were just lucky that lucas didn't make a spaceship that the brittish wired up otherwise it wouldn't have got off the ground

I have a range of approx. 200 km on a full tank - so I have about 150 km of fuel left at the moment. I'll take it apart in a few days time and tell you how I go repairing the bugger.
