Who says I will be hooning? ........Well, OK, so I will but you cant always assume that people on this forum are hoons... Well, OK, you can.....but......

PS Why would an 1100 be more comfy than a hydro mini, especially as I will be the only person in it.

The Morris 1100 has a much better ride than a Hydro Mini, the longer wheelbase and wider track take most of the pitch and roll away.
The seats in the 1100 are much more comfortable on long trips than Mini seats (except possibly the 1275LS seats) I can drive my 1100 for hours and when I get out I do not get the aches and pains that I get in more modern cars. A very relaxing ride.

Plus.... If it gets hot you can wind down all 4 windows!

I think the extra weight length and width helps with the ride , not a lot though , just a tad better than a mini but the mini's still better .

Just read what Paddy had to say about the 1968 London to Sydney 1800s...he was disappointed with their engine performance....everything else (including hydro was fine)....they changed a rack after an indiscretion...thats about it.

They had agonised over whether to two or three crew, and Paddy did say that could have been a winning advantage. He also went on to say that the trip just wouldn't have been the same without the young mechanic/driver and fellow Irishman Alec Poole.

Paddy attributes his 6 minute "loss" to Cowan as underestimating a 4 hour section in the Snowy Mountains....could not believe the number of bends involved and had been travelling at a slower pace and finally woke up too late.

I vaguely remember reading an 1800 build sheet...all the good MGB bits AFAIR...obviously not powerful enough for Paddy :!: :)

Go the comfort.

I'd rather do it in my mini than in my wifes VT conformadore - that thing leaves me in pain for a week after a long drive.....

If it's a well built motor it should do it no probs.

I have built up 500km over a weekend in my mini on many occasions with no problems :)

I do Melbourne - Sydney - Bathurst - Melbourne (or the other way around) on average three times a year. Also Melbourne-Adelaide twice a year and loads more. Melbourne-Brisbane most years. All this in the trusty Mini Van. Standard 1100 (well, 0.060" oversize) and 10" wheels. I love it.
About the only things I would change would be a more comfortable seat (the one I've got is out of some sort of Bongo van and is getting a bit old and saggy) and either a better cruising diff, or five-speed box, and possibly a bigger motor - although the 1100 copes quite well, even at 110km/h on many stretches.
Whatever seat you go for, I strongly recommend a recliner on a long trip.
Hydro would be smoother, but fit shockers on the front to stop getting sea-sick! Morris 1100 is a better ride (I've owned one and loved it) but doesn't have the cool fun-factor of the Mini.
Remember though, as you no-doubt already realise, and as others have already said, it is a 30+ year-old car so problems will arise, so be prepared. Good maintenance, a few essential spares and know how to fit them.
I've been driving Minis and Mokes on long trips for over 20 years, and I don't have a hunch in the middle of my back, or a twisted right foot (twisted brain perhaps.)
Oh, and air-con from Jap import would be nice in summer.

Cheers, Watto.

I'd go for the 3.4 diff on larger wheels, the Moke has this on 13" sits a bit over 3000rpm on 100k/hr, take the parachute off (roof) any it will peg.
