This new one behaves exactly how the old one did until it died. When it died it wouldn't do anything but click when i tried to start it. Actually... it didn't even do that unless i pressed the starter button i have in the engine bay. Pushing the starter button that's on the dash did nothing once the starter died.

So seeing that it does the same thing the old one did i would tend to guess it's not a problem that was the result of swapping the starters. It possibly is the battery still or just that it's english and thus an underperforming car despite copious dollars spent on it.

I had this problem with a "reconditioned" starter motor from a popular mini spareparts place. Mine turned like "Reerrrt Reeerrrt Reeerrrt" instead of continuous spinning. After 6 months it also died. I threw in a second hand factory unit and never looked back since...

Go and see the auto sparkie he can test how much your starters drawing and test the battery, it was a second hand starter that was probably only in slightly better condition than the one you replaced, lets face it these things don't last forever and either buy a reco one with warranty or have yours rebuilt
