Ok, so iv'e got a 1974 clubman s but recently put a 1.3i import engine in it, with disc brakes and all the other bits. At the moment it is still registered and insured under the old engine number. So im pretty sure my insurer wont pay out if i have a prang. Can I just go down to the registration office and fill out a few forms to change it, or is it more complicated because it's an imported engine? I want to get it fully legal so I feel a bit safer when driving past a coppa and to add a bit more value.

In NSW - its a bit like a mini blue slip. The authorised inspection agent checks the engine number and a couple of obvious things (like the engine mounts are done up), charges you the required money and then you go to the RTA to have the details changed on the system.

Take a receipt of the engine purchase with you.

Its no more than what I have just described above.
I had to tell the inpection agent to notate that disc brakes were fitted as it was a 1275 motor.

thanks, it should be the same or similar in SA. I just have to get a catalitic converter installed and it should meet the emmision standards. Just hope I don't get some bastar inspector who will pick on everything.

I put an imported engine into my mini in SA, (was only a 998 tho so didnt need discs), just went to the rego office and told them the new engine number, that was it. As long as the engine doesnt show up as stolen you should be sweet. :)

Let me know how you go as I have recently purchased a 1275 engined car that doesn't have disc's and doesn't have corresponding engine numbers so I will probably have to go through the same things as you.

As i said, i had to prompt the NSW Blue slip inspectorto notate that the mini had discs. The RTA didn't seem all that fussed one way or another either - just typed.

I think its only a legal issue if something goes wrong like an accident.

But having said that - my mini as an 1100 got to 100kph, as a 1275 its hard to keep it under that. Drums, morally, are inadequate for the higher performance of the big bore motor.

But i dont think you will have trouble getting a motor change notice into the system with drums. Nobody official seems to care - it has factory fitted brakes and its only a 175 extra cc's.

When we took Barney the `67 Pretend S in to get the blueslip for his 1981 ex-Moke 1293A+ motor, they never looked either. I told them it had discs while they were writing it up, and they still didn't care to look.
Depends where you go for the inspection though..
