I need to borrow a car trailer big enough for a Mini for a weekend. (Fri arvo to Sun arvo)
Trailer nees to be registered and capable of a return trip from Syd to Tweed Heads.
I am happy to part with a couple of cartons in exchange for use of said trailer.

Couldn't you just hire a trailer for the same cost of buying a couple of cartons (i'm assuming you mean of beer)? Go down to your local servo and ask how much it costs to hire a trailer.

Steady on !! Commercial car trailers are about $150 a day to hire - so thats $450 for three days. They are also pigs of things to tow because they a built to be bullet proof and are heavy heavy. Toss in fuel and there is not much difference in cost from getting a car carrier to do the job.

A couple of cartons is a good deal to me. Pity I dont have a trailer

And probably better to hire one for that sort of distance as well , there'll be some form of insurance cover on it in the case of an accident (probably not much but at least it should cover failure of part of it coming off and hitting someone else) , normally not available with a borrowed trailer . Also you're looking at a fairly decent distance tow , a professional hire trailer should have good bearings etc and also the backup if the trailer has a problem to go to the local agent and get a replacement (talking the big companies here like Coates etc) . If you borrow someones trailer and don't know them really , really well to know how they look after it , take the wheel bearings out and grease them before going , there were 7 trailers on the side of the road with collapsed bearings between Coff's and Brisbane on the weekend . People expect them to sit most of the year and then do a big trip without servicing them .......

Edit > Mike , last time I hired one (not too long ago) it was around the $50 mark per day for a car trailer . I might have got a better deal through having dealt with the hire guy's before but I wouldn't have thought that much .

Yeah, he looked at hiring one, was quoted $300 apparently. A bit steep for a bloody trailer if you ask me.

That is fairly steep , but still might be worth it , shop around and see what's the best he can get , try the big companies as well as the servo's .

No thats the rate - I am hiring one to go to 1310/71's place to remove a 1100s shell in the next couple of days.
Maybe its the countery rate but thats it !!!!

I havn't seen $50 for many years but depends on the definition of a day - a day is 24 hours and thats the rate for 24 hours. !!

I thought someone in the Mini Community would have a trailer they could help out with. I had figured that a trailer from the Servo was complete overkill to tow a Mini on, most of them actually weigh more than the mini itself.

I just had a look at Kennards, its $113 per day, of $453 per week, pretty stiff on their pricing.

To move a car that distance, I reckon, you need to either own the trailer or know who owns it and have confidence that it is up to the trip....

But really, a car carrier or someone with a tiltray looking to backload or whatever would be a better way to go.....might cost you up to 500 (say) but you don't have the wear and tear on your tow vehicle/trailer combo, time-off work, worry, FUEL etc

Ive had problems with them too, most require the car to be registered, not simply just running, before I came down from Brisbane at christmas, most quotes I had gotten to move it were around the $900 mark. It is looking that I might simply have to get temporary rego on the car and drive it down, another hassle I have, is it is insured with Unique car Insurance, who will insure it if I tow it, but wont insure it if I have it trucked, and the amount Shannons quoted for their insurance was too high for the amount it gets used.

That's a BIIIIIG ask to borrow someones trailer that you don't know, for that distance. Yea 'most' of the Mini community are pretty decent people, but that still stretches the friendship I reckon.

I understand it was a big ask, it was worth seeing if someone had one, even if they were prepared to hire it. I was prepared to pay money for it. As I said it was worth asking the question.

It's always worth asking the question , I just feel the distance is the killer in your case , I'm sure there would be several available if it wasn't Sydney to the Tweed . I wasn't trying to call you a tightwad or anything , my main point is getting a trailer that will safely do the distance , I've carried all manner of things on some awful trailers over the years and now I only use hire trailers from places I know to have the best chance possible to not be sitting on the side of the road trying to replace bearings with a couple of tonnes of steel on a car trailer . I've also since checked the price , I was underquoting for a normal hire fee , it seems I've still been getting a discount from my civil construction days ......
