I need a new timing chain and was considering my options. Iv'e had a look at doing it myself but it looks like a difficult job and my dad advised me to get it done by a mini mechanic or is it fairly easy? how much will it cost to get the chain replaced professionaly? Also is it worth upgrading to duplex? How much more will that cost? Iv'e also read on a few posts on here about belts instead of chains. Would that be worth looking at? Any views or advice will be greatly appreciated.

Clubbie or roundie? Clubman can be a bit easier since there is a bit more room. It is a tricky job, you have to remove the radiator etc and undo the crankshaft pulley. If you don't feel competent at doing it, then yes get a Mini mechanic to do it for you.

The upgrade to Duplex is worthwhile (compared to simplex), and the sprockets will cost you under $100 new, + chain ($10-$20, depending on brand). If all you have is a bog stock 998, it probably isn't worth the bother to upgrade.

<edit>Just saw your sig, if it's a 1.3i then put duplex on. It should currently have a tensioner fitted, which you can retain since it can only help. You will need to countersink the screws on the backplate for duplex, so even more reason to get a Mini mechanic to do it.

Changing the chain is pretty easy, upgrading to duplex is not much more work, IF you have tools and experience..
For duplex you need to countersink the 2 lower screw holes in the engine front plate, and use either Unbrako or Phillips head csk screws. The old ones will foul the wider chain...
A duplex kit with chain is around $91 upwards, but more for adjustable.

A belt drive kit is nearly $500 now. Exxy.. hardly worth it unless it's a race car.

thx for that. What would I pay in the way of labour if I get a mechanic to do a duplex conversion?
