 Woohoo....might that be a beer that Anto owes me???

I put such a big bet on this because Dylan had a very similar problem a year or so back - pretty good compression but blowing out water from the exhaust. Head gasket was blown between 3 and 4.

Hope sorry, the gasket hasn't blown between 2 & 3   On a small bore it is much more likely to blow between 3 & 4 since the gap is smaller and cylinder 4 runs hotter. In my case it hasn't blown between the cylinders at all, it has blown between a water gallery and a cylinder thus letting water in. Well, that's what I assume based on how it is running (or not running :) )

Interesting with Dylan's problem it blew water out the exhaust? I've blown a head gasket between 3 & 4 on numerous occasions (in fact that is the reason my last engine split the sleeves and burnt a chunk out of the cylinder head  ), but it has always just run really rough and poured water out the radiator overflow.

The weird thing with my car at the moment is you could drive it all day long, it shows no sign of a problem. Except the steam :P

Took it down to the bloke who actually owns the engine (not that he wants it back!) and he had a bit of a look. Yes, you can actually see the water in the cylinders, through the spark plug holes. I'm going to say maybe its a cracked cylinder head, more than just a blown gasket. Over only a short period of sitting one of the cylinders had a good inch or so of water in it. Still drives alright, in fact better since he only put the rad cap on half way to lessen the pressure.

Anto...smog head sitting in my garage doing nothing if ya need it....looks OK but I would disassemble the valves, springs and collets before using (no confidence in the fella who put it together)

(Oh, assembly is the opposite of disassembly) :)

What is it about the design of A series motors that they can be all but completely rooted and blow smoke like a steam train but still pull strongly ? I've seen in magazines where there's a VW show each year and they stick a VW motor built from spares in a cage and run it at redline till it blows , normally fairly soon after starting . I've been tempted to do that with a near dead mini motor but I'm sure it'd just keep revving till fuel or oil ran out . I've killed many mini motors but nearly all through wear , only two were bearing failures and they were caused by a dodgy clutch master cylinder . They's tough little beasties .....

OT Warning:
I used to work at a VW mechanics in Sydney. We picked out a knackered 1200 for the engine blow at a VW show. This engine was blowing smoke and had a bad bearing knock, so my boss figured it would blow quickly, either throw a rod or snap the crank. Darn thing ran for 18 mins at full throttle before finally dropping No.3 exhaust valve. They actually had to add fuel to the small fuel tank they were using, or would have run out before it blew.
