I was thinking about cutting some out of oil containers to replace the old paper gaskets.... and to avoid having a rubber edge protruding around the hinge... do the rubber ones have a lip?

Yes the rubber ones DO have a lip. As they age, they shrink- so it's not all a bed of roses...

It's not plain paper, more like composition gasket stuff. The flat ones, that is.

I like the look of the black gaskets with the raised edge. When I bought my deluxe it had the ( greasy to feel ) gasket material. The edge of this looked like an after thought, so I changed them. The black edging adds to the looks of the car IMHO.

The body and add ons (doors bonnet and boot) were originally painted separately then assembled with gasket paper type gaskets under the hinges (similar to those now available from various suppliers). They then had a final finish coat applied
When the Rota Dip process was discontinued in the early seventies the cars were assembled from panels with cathodic coating (also using gasket paper type gaskets) then painted using an electostatic process which was supposed to coat the whole car. As seen by the rust under the hinges on most clubmans the end result wasnt very succesfull
The rubber type gaskets are aftermarket and dont attract moisture so tend to minimise the rust problem

Have a look at the rusted mess of metal that was under the door hinges.Have just had it cut out
