Our Rover 1275 SPI engined clubby does'nt seem to get the best fuel economy, it's just done over 200 klms & has gone thru 35 litres of fuel, is this normal???? i would'nt belive so. Anybody with a rover mini what kind of economy are you getting? or any tips on how to increase economy???/

Check the engine temp sensor is working. If it thinks it is cold, it will richen it right up.

thats way too high, i normally get about around 10 ltrs to 100km. thats a rough estimated, and with me going on constant hills runs :D im not sure what the specified comsumption is. Do you have a workshop manual for the engine? Might be a troubleshooting guide in there.

Have a look at the MAP sensor line. From the ECU, there should be a thin plastic tube running to the back of the inlet manifold via an oil trap. The plastic line is connected to the ECU, the oil trap and the manifold by really cruddy rubber elbows which crack, split and leak. . .once this happens, the ECU assumes you're driving flat out all the time (no vacuum signal) and dumps in the appropriate amount of fuel. . .
When I fixed the elbows on our old SPi Cooper, fuel economy went from about 20mpg up to about 50. . .BIG difference.
The line is difficult to get to (particularly at the back of the manifold) but then, what ISN'T difficult to get to on an injected Mini?

Hope this helps.

All the vacuum hoses have been replaced since i've had it, still crap economy either way.

Well. . . if you're sure :)
The MAP sensor line was a fair bastard to seal in my case. . .
If you want a crude (but effective none the less) test to see whether the MAP sensor is working, then while the car is idling unplug the vac line from the ECU, block the end going to the manifold and see what the idle speed and engine note does. If it doesn't change, then there's a problem with either the sensor or the line. If you then hook up a vac line to the ECU and apply vacuum (suck on the pipe :D ), the engine note should change if the MAP sensor is working. . .if not, it's probably stuffed - in which case, it's new ECU time. If the engine note does change with sucking, then there must be a leak in the manifold to ECU line somewhere. .
As Mokesta said, it could also be a dud coolant sensor. . .this is on the bottom of the inlet manifold and changing it is probably the single most difficult job you can do on a Mini without removing the motor. . . :(
Air temp sensor doesn't seem to make much difference - when we bought our Cooper, it had a K&N cone filter with no provision for the air temp sensor so, in true Japanese 'tuning' style, it was left dangling in the engine bay. After putting the original air box (and sensor) back on. . .there was absolutely no difference in ease of starting, drivability or fuel economy. . .

I reckon I used to get about 8L/100km in our old 1992 SPI Automatic Mayfair, so there's definitely something wrong there.

Good luck in sorting it out

check to see if the temp sensor wire has come out. Iv'e had a lot of trouble with mine, it used to always come out so I had to crimp the plug a little bit. It's a bastard to get in, i found the easiest way was to disconnect the raditator hoses going into the throttle body. I didn't notice any difference in economy when it was disconnected though, and steve at brickworx noticed it was unplugged and said it didn't really matter.

Give Steve a call, see if he's coming into Syd when we go up to Brisbane for attempt two

If so, he can fault test your computer... see exactly whats wrong with it, etc.
Or you could hunt down any other Rover "specialist" that you might have in Sydney, but good luck

I did a fuel test with my 1993 SPI Rover Mini Mayfair, (Auto) I put in 20 litres and got 258kms, which isn't too bad when you break it down. Works out at about 7.5 litres per 100kms. What everyone said roughly.

Not bad for a little go kart. My V8 Calais used to use around 13-14 litres of fuel per 100kms, and that wasn't city driving where as now I'm doing city driving. Glad I have a MIni.
