Just got the motor for my LS back today from the engine rebuilder.. It has been bored out to 1029cc, balanced and blueprinted, double row timing chain and the cam has been ground to a 282 config... The head is a 12G202, now converted for unleaded and has been given a bit of a work over...

When finished it will have a Pulsar dizzy fitted, Bosch GT40R coil, Gemini starter motor, new radiator with a 16 blade metal fan.. Keeping the 1 1/2" SU and the extractors...

Still has to be all put back together and fitted into the LS but that might be a couple of months away yet...

After that lot, it might appreciate a bit more carb than a single HS4...

Hi, out of interest how much did the rebuild cost including the head work?

With a new clutch, gaskets, complete stripping, acid bath for motor & head, machining plus reassembling it came to $1700.00..

But I still have to get a new rocker and pushrod assembly, new head bolts and other bits and pieces to finish it off as well as getting it fitted to the car...

Would you suggest a 1 3/4" SU then Doc as I don't really want to go for twins...

Yeah a 1-3/4 will work, put it on a decent manifold. Like a GR or MiniSpares.
Or go for a Dellorto/Weber...

Doc, can you get a resonable amount of grunt out of a stroked and mildly worked 998? Does a weber make a big difference over a big su?

Have a look at the dyno results we got at MRC last year, some `1098's were getting high 40s at the wheels.
A Weber or Dellorto will give more top end, drink more fuel, make nice gurgling noises, give crisper throttle response at mid-high rpm. But an SU is probably more civilised, if that's your thing.
I only like my SUs `au pair', if I'm using them...

Matt yup you can get very good power out of small bores, and
dont think you have to stroke a 998 either. a 998 will make good
power figures if worked and dont let anyone tell you different. Mymotor will be
proof of that when it is done

Yeah Chris you can get good power from either a 998 or 1098. But, when it comes to torque, there ain't no replacement for displacement...

Yup torqu is the most important thing for a motor. and all u doubters of
998's alll i say is u wait and see the figures

U will get easier torque from getiing a 1098 obviousy, but why go down
the common road!! i like things a bit different, and i like 998;s.

Matt, when the motor is done, u are welcome to take it for a run. and when its
done i will post up what has been done.
