Hey all, the beast is being dropped back in over the next day or so ...

I've re-built the driveshafts as well as the engine / gearbox so at the moment they are all out of the car ...

Just trying to work out the best method of re-assembly, (Rod-Change Box / Pot Joints / "S" Disk-Brake CV's )

1. Engine In - Slide driveshafts in and install "Gently" into place with a mallet ?
2. Driveshafts in first and line up with engine as its being lowered on the mounts ?
3 .Wheels / Hubs off and install driveshafts after engine has been totally installed...

4....... ?

Ideas Suggestions ?
Probably be doing it on my own, so one handed techniques appreciated !

J

I find method #2 pretty easy (apart from dropping the damn balls from the pot joints) so I've never tried the other ways

forgot the mention... Pots are in the gearbox as complete usints... the driveshafts are just bare splines on the end ....

but shouldnt be a hassle.. maybe even make it easier ?

I had to convert over to pot joint driveshafts with the current Mini motor. I put the motor in first, which had the complete pot joint assemblies with boots and clips all on. Then afterwards I offered up the driveshafts, no problem at all. In fact, yes I think it is easier just having to slide the splined shaft in.

I agree, no# 1 if the pots are assembled, I got caught with my moke, assembled and regreased pots (new gaiters) on ends of shafts.....

Doh........ wont fit through hole in subframe!!

I take it your hubs are out at present? if not, you can probably get by just breaking top ball joint and tipping hub forward, although, takes no time really to break both joints, remove hub, dont need to split brake hoses, just support hub while you insert cv from rear, then refit hub, engaging shaft into pot joint, might need a tap with a copper mallet!

"Assembly is reverse of removal" (John Haynes) :P :?

Any chance of seeing you and the Brick on Sunday James?

i dont know if it would be a pain for you to do, but i take the front subframe off, then put it all together out of the car, and drop the mini over the subframe. much easier and less chance of scratching an area that might be seen

When I converted Barney, I assembled the driveshafts and fitted them in afterwards complete- as Graham in aus says, the pot joint won't fit thru the early subframes but the CV will.
Only hassle I had was the wire circlip on LH diff output shaft needed replacing.
Beauty of this method is it's less messy, I just hate assembling greasy pot joints on the car... :x

Thanks Guys, Graham, only if I'm very, very lucky ..... :-)

I've still got a lot to sort out... (Not giving away too many secrets...)
Engine, Turbo, intercooler, heat exchanger, some dash mods, some new instrumentation etc etc ...

also will have to be run in, and I'm not sure i could hold back on a run like that !

Cheers, might just pack the fam into the Suby and bring our fluffy dog "Rex" (Although you probably rmember him as "Chuck" ....
