Anyone used these NGK Iridium plugs? Supposed to be good for over 100k with all sorts of claimed advantages over conventional types. On sale at Super C for $15 each.

Remember that iridium or platinum plugs are really only for increasing the spark plug service interval - they can in fact lower the power of your engine. . .
Essentially, platinum or iridium is harder and more conductive than iron or copper used in conventional plugs. . .this means that less voltage is required to produce a spark. . .but it also means that the spark is weaker. This can be overcome by widening the plug gap to produce a fatter, more powerful spark BUT. . .if you regap a platinum or iridium plugs, you chop all the iridium or platinum coating off, and turn your $15 plugs into ordinary $2 ones. . .(the platinum or iridium coating is only a few microns thick).
I personally reckon a properly gapped set of copper plugs (at a couple of dollars a pop) changed every 10 or 15 thousand km is the way to go. . .but then if you're more concerned with a long service interval than performance, the platinums or iridiums will are definately the way to go!

ive only ever hear of them used in cars like legacy gt's where changing the plugs is a hell of a job and involves lots of paid time. id wory about the mini running to rich and destroying them, or is this not an issue with them?

What's a set of these worth?

I've got a Denso Iridium lanyard with a set of keys for my 1275 LS on it. I got it from the GP in 05, hehe. Maybe I might get the plugs to match!

.025" correct for stock ignition, but if you are running a Pertronix ignitor or a Pulsar dizzy, you can use UP TO .040".
I run .035" with my Pulsars, allows for a bit of plug wear.

I had Iridiums in my AU Ford when bought, but they had worn out to .080" gap and mileage was crap. :x
I gapped them to 1.1mm and much better. :)
Now running stocko NGKs in it...

I run NGKs in all the cars - 035 on the Mini Van with Lumenition electtronic igniton and up to 040 on the Rover with Lumenition + MSD amplifier.

NGK and Nippon Denso seem to be the best pugs around IMHO. Don't like Bosch or Champion. Anyone tried AC Delco?

Funny, I've always found Champion Gold plugs (just normal old copper plugs - about $3 each) to be as good as annything out there. . .on Minis, turbo cars, whatever. . .

In the starlet iridiums are standard, the other issue is they are good for turbos as they are also heat rated (at least the ones for Starlets). I think you are really only getting any advantage if you run a full electronic ignition on stardard mini setup they are pretty much underutilised.

Cheers

Matt

I wonder how easy it would be to remove plugs that had been in there for the whole 132000km that they're supposed to be good for? might be a tad stuck...
