Lately i have been researching paint and the processes that go with it
why do so many people seem to be using 2 Pac primer and Acrylic Top coat
why not both acrylic??

I will be looking at acrylic top coat as i wont have a REAL booth

One of the reasons that a lot of people are using 2 pak primer is that you can get 2 pak as a high fill primer that will go over just about any other paint and seal the surface and have a rust inhibitor as well, acrylic primer will react with old enamels and does not seal the surface when the top coats are applied, so instead of having to spray bog and prime with acrylic you can do it in one job with 2 pak

Ordinary acrylic Hi Fill primers get a condition called ?sink back? after a few months. This is where the primer actually shrinks under the top coat colour, and after a few months you start to see sanding marks and imperfections that were in the panel before primer application. I have observed this on other peoples freshly painted cars, and this is not pretty.

2K Hi Fill is not susceptible to sink back, and is the perfect base for a great paint job

is it the 2K HI Filler safe to spray and does it spray straight onto metal or you still need to metal etch prime then spray 2k Hi Fill then Top

by safe i mean can i spray at home unlike 2K which i hear is a no no

In reality you are not supposed to spray anything at home 2 pak primer is safer than top coats but you should make sure to wear proper breathing gear and be covered from knock to ankle but that goes for all painting

yeah ok i will give them a go then and just straight on to metal or etch prime first

soo etch prime needed first or just spray the 2k high build primer straight on metal

If the car is bare metal etch prime before priming

A good paint job is never just the glossy top coat.

Always ETCH PRIME bare metal.

Never apply bog straight onto bare metal either. I choose to ETCH, 2K Hi Fill, then skim fill if necessary, sand and 2K prime again.

That way, if you sand your filler you are less likely to sand back to bare metal again.

Bare metal, greasy / oily hands, moisture....all bad combos.

Always CLEAN bare metal, then DO NOT TOUCH it again until the etch is applied. Be a nancy boy and wear gloves too. Surgical gloves are the go. Then there is no way of getting oily hands on bare metal.

Your sweat will rust metal. Some people are worse than others. When I was in the metal industry, people called me 'rusty hands', because I would touch some metal, and the next day it would be covered in rust!

thanks heaps guys i have learnt a heap and feel i am ready to have a crack at it
just gotta get a mask now i think i will look aroun for a good one as saftey first right

Definitely don't skimp on the mask , you're lungs can't fight against the stuff in 2 pack and they only get one chance . Go talk to an older , dodgy spraypainter and watch them cough ......

Not sure , but try and ask at a specialised paint supply place rather than a hardware , also , if you know any spraypainters ask them what they use and what's the most comfortable . Just remember any allergies you have as well (latex or chemicals) as you'll be wearing the respirator for a while and it'll be hot and moist inside , perfect for allergies and reactions .
