Re White needles versus red needles.

Delved into my Clubman parts book to try and make sense of all this and there are white and red needle speedos, tachos, fuel and temp gauges for the GT.

Part nos for the GT are:
White needles
Speedo HYL 4356
Tacho HYL 4357
Fuel HYL4361
Temp HYL 4360

Red needles
Speedo HYL4512
Tacho HYL4505
Fuel HYL4503
Temp HYL 4504

The colour change also occurred on other clubman models as well. Clubman S for both 2 and 3 instrument clusters. Other models as well?

The red needled instruments are the second type but the changeover points are not stated. In typical BMC fashion they have a reference to the fact that a changeover occurred but not when. Really useful! Probably didn't know themselves?

The tachos were changed from a current sensing type to a voltage sensing type at some stage but when? Maybe the white needle tachos are current sensing and the red needles are voltage sensing. Just a suggestion.

As for the black GT gear knob, it doesn't appear to be the right shape although it's a bit hard to tell from the piccie. Maybe from a MGB GT when they couldn't get a proper GT one?

Hope this helps.

RonR

thanks for all the info!
As said, mine has white needles, but the PO sold the right tacho, and told me incorrectly(as i reminded him later when i found out) that it should have a 5500 redline, not the proper 6500 one. I was sure i was right at the time, but then again, he was a gt owner of 20 years.
Anyway, i managed to buy a 6500 tacho and it had a white needle, so i am happy now.
The clubman brochure in modern motor of october 71 (priceless mag!!!) shows white needles too - and they were obviously the first.

Interesting.....orange needles. My gauges have white needles.

What year is yours Elle? mid 72 ?

yes, 72 but late...december. I have some great shots that the VIP inspection guy took when I bought the car (Brisbane) and I've just posted onto photobucket. However, while I've worked out how to post individual shots but not yet worked out how to put a link to the whole album up. Anyway, will sort that out and I think for all the GT'heads out there it's always good to see another GT and how it's been restored. This one was done (not by me) with an eye to the original as possible. At least...I think it's tasteful...sometimes that's all you can do...cause some of it is guesswork or sharing information which is sometimes approximate....if you know what I mean...

:)

But mine is broken
anyway we have a 73'' leyland that has had the GT stuff transfered into it, it's a markII cooper S engine ( i know GT but you get what i mean, the last ones went into the GT's) anyway I don't know how early of a GT the car was but this is the knob that was also transfered.

Just heared from Cody who very kindly gave me that knob, apparently it was
out of a very early GT (his was number 86...) so i think they must have changed to the
brown ones later on!

Thanks Cod's

Does anyone know a knob restorer. That is...the clear plastic cover (which I think is a 1970's type 'perspex' )on mine is chipped on the side. I'd like to get it replaced or remolded. Anyideas?

:)

I am considering having reproduction knobs made.

Haven't made enquiries as of yet, but if they could make them in the 70's, then surely they can be reproduced today!! :D

Ours is number 4 and has a brown gearknob. I really think the black ones are of another BMC/Leyland product.
