I had a funny one. I was staying in townsville for work and we had hired scooters as we were only 20 and couldn't hire cars. The hotel we were staying at (can't remember the name but was pretty nice - on the edge of the main mall in the centre of town) had valet parking. They said just to leave them out the front - loading zone, but they said it was ok with scooters.

Anywho, we never actually got the tickets - probably as there was nowhere to leave them on the scooters - but apparently they were issued. We also never got a reminder in the mail as the hire place never bothered to forward them.

First we heard of it was about 6 months later I got a Court Summons in the mail!! I shat myself!! Long way to go to contest a fine!

Luckily they were understanding when I phoned up and explained my story - from memory they even let me off the late fee and I just paid the original fine amount 8)

My fiancee got a parking ticket the other day at Sunshine Plaza. She said that she finally feels like a local instead of tourist because of it. The fine was $20, but I got more than that worth of entertainment out of the fact that she got a ticket, so it's ok.

i paid it today, the court costs would far outweigh the parking fine, realistically what the point in going to court over it  in the end it is only $78 only half a weeks income

cheers

Are you serious? I earn more than that in half a day!

well its not okay, but still it isnt worth my while going to court over it. i have written a letter to the council and will post it on monday.

cheers

Do you know the name of the copper you were talking to and did you include that in your letter ? The more info you can give the better , but I agree with you about the expense of taking it to court . Strange how parking fines and speeding fines are the only ones where you're guilty until proven innocent , the police or parking officers don't have to prove your guilt unless you take it to court ....

yeah i got the police mans name and badge number afterwards. these fines are given under council by laws so are different to traffic fines (ie speeding fines) it is fair enough too. A crime of strict liability means there didnt have to be intent (mens rea) for example you couldnt prove someone intended to speed could you? so the guilty act (actus reus) is grounds for prosecution or fine.

i will see what the council comes back with but hell if i didnt deserve it this time i deserved it last time

cheers
