1kg fire extinguishers are cheap insurance*. My wife's mini and my Commer van both have them. In all these cases mentioned, they could stop smaller fires reaching the fuel tank.

* So why don't insurance companies give you a discount, or subsidise the cost?

Yeah, I installed a fire extinguisher in my mini earlier this week.

It adds points to the "Peace-of-Mind" scale.

crap yeah...... I remember going for a ride in a beetle, sitting in the back, when suddenly the stereo started playing up and the seat under me started smoking...... I was basically compressing the seat springs down onto the terminals over every bump. The seat itself was filled with something that resembled hay.

Isnt there something other than steel that can be used as a battery strap??? Aluminium would be better, surely....

i should really get something to cover over my battery. and hearing these stories again i will. . . when i get home.

some one told me recently that to stop corosion with there mini when they ahd a cover over it course condesation or something would build up that they put vaselean or is it vaseline over there battery terminals.
does anyone else do this or know of doing this?

And don't forget the high magnesium content of the crankcase and gearbox housing , my broithers a firey and they have special instructions on dealing with VW's on fire compared to other makes , stand back and watch . Water or foam won't put it out , the only thing that will stop it once the magnesium is alight is to bury the entire car with sand .....

I heard a story once of a cooper s glancing a tree and exploding in the rear after the tank was pushed against the battery terminals which welded to the tank and ignited the fuel within

I've had a Quell CAMS approved 1kg extinguisher in Lillee for 2 years now for exactly the same reason... I had a short under the bonnet and there was smoke everywhere

I have been meaning to get a fire extinguisher for some time now, but after reading this thread i went to a un-named auto parts store and bought a 1kg extinguisher for $40 (i had a voucher, so technically it was free) :D

now i am just debating if i should stand it up-right on the LH in front of the door or lay it down bolted to the from of the seat cross member/ brace thingy! :?

either way, i have been so paranoid for such a long time about Teddy going up in smoke, now i have peace of mind!!!

Stand it up in front of the door. Then if you hit anything it's less likely to get torn from its mount.
And you can see and reach it easier. 8)
BTW if for motor sport use, I hope it has a metal bracket, not the crap plastic one... :x

Not for motorsport, but yes it does have a proper metal mounting bracket, i eevn took it out of the box and bag in the store to have a look at it, the guy came up to me and asked if i needed a hand (checking i wasnt knocking anything off more to the point)

But yeh, all good, just means that i need to remove my speakers from that front panel first (i dont listen to it anyway)
