we owned a patrol for a while. Man i hated that car. I was always right up the back. You see, there was my dad, my stepmother, my 18y/o step brother, my 16 y/o stepsister, me (14 at the time) my 12 year old sister and my 9 year old sister. Very squishy, but better than when we owned a facon wagon with extra seats added. Theres a lot of 4wd's in Drysdale, and they cause havoc on portarlington road. you see, because drysdale is classed as 'rural', they think that they can justify owning one. But theres no need for them in drysdale itsself! the only people who need them are people, like my mother, who live on an actual property, and not just the standard 1/4 acre lot. (we're on 43 acres and need to tow a horse float - so we have a jeep)

now our place is on portarlington road, on a 90 one, and coming from drysdale you have to do a right hand turn. I cannot remember the number of times a 4wd has overtaken me ON THE RIGHT while i slowed down with my indicator on to turn into my driveway. They'll kill us all one day.

actually i meant to add that people should only be allowed to buy 4wd's if they have a legitimate reason. and driving around your 2.5 kids in one "cos its safer" is a bull excuse.

i believe it is unfair to say that people need a reason to buy a 4wd. Its like saying that people should have a reason to buy a mini, people often complain that they are hrd to see etc, but we all have them because its our hobby. Just like alot of people have 4wds as a hobby. I personaly would love to own a fwd so i could do some serious off road driving.

i also feel bad for you honk, it hust isnt right. People need to learn how to drive their chosen vehicle including big cars, small cars, slow cars, fast cars, motorbikes, push bikes and any other form of transport.

but you have to admit that there is a large percentage of 4wd's out there that will never see dirt, nor will they ever go off road. We dont need these things in cities.

Glad you're alright honk! You need to hold a different licence to drive a truck. The reason for this is weight, size, visability, etc. etc. etc. I believe all 4WD owners should hold some kind of extra licence, as I believe all licence holders should do the learners motorcycle awareness course.

I'd second that entirely. At least (larger) truck operators drive with an awareness of the responsibility of a heavier vehicle's limitations and possible impact. Conversly there seems to be a high portion of 4WD ownership based on that "stuff you, I'm safe up here attitude".

PS: I had the same thing happen (not in a Mini), and ended up bending a rim on a curb rather hit him, and he also pissed off. In hindsight I wish I'd just hit him. I'd be so keen just to hear him say sorry and jibber some pathetic excuse

Doesn't give way mean NOT to impede the progress of oncomming traffic? especially by pulling out infront you at only 10kms. Sorry but I generally don't trust 4WD's. Even children and dogs on the roadside can be more predictably erratic.
(end of rant)......sorry

FWIW I'm with adeee (or atleast here optinion on this matter :D)

As a cyclist and motorcyclist I'm more often disgusted at 4wd drivers than any other road users.

It still amazes me the number of 4wd drivers that try and race or keep up with me on the bike, the old "i'm not gonna let him get past me" metality. Hello people, 2.5 tonnes of steel, glass and plastic just doesn't start stop or turn like a 200kg bike+rider. You are a menace to other road users and pedestrians.

I was in Sydney Thursday and friday to bring kid home from school for the holidays. Stayed the night in my FIL's willoughby house.

As we left yesterday morning - mid morning - I asked the kid to count the number of 4wd's in the street. We got eleven in a 100 metre stretch. Not one looked as though it had ever had dust or mud on the suspension or tyres.

There is no justification for those vehicles for the average home. Especially as the trend is for younger people (especially young females) to buy smaller more fuel efficient cars. The sort of cars that come off worst in an accident and also sit lower that the 4wd vision when reversing. Parking by braille is not acceptable.

Its always been said that a large coccoon, a good stereo system, climate control and a mobile phone and you are not part of the traffic system.

Thanks everyone!

Unfortunately neither I or the car infront got the number plate.. The 4wd just shot out infront slowed down a tiny bit, then once he realised what he had caused, pissed off as quickly as he could.

I've got a new rim ready to go on, just need to get the tire put onto it. Everything else seems fine except the flare got pulled off the body a bit aswell. I'll get some photos of the damage up tomorrow.
