Interesting thought:

If i was to replace the original speedo in the deluxe (faded, grotty etc) with a new 'genuine reproduction' speedo, the odometer would read zero.

How does that effect the legality of the vehicle?

Are there any other issues I need to consider?

Technically it is illegal to change or wind back your vehicles speedo , though it is a grey area when you are replacing a dodgy original unit . Have a chat to your local registry authority and check but I think it's a matter of recording somewhere (mainly for newer vehicles , it'd be recorded in the handbook etc) the mileage when you changed to a new speedo with 0 klm/miles on it .

EDIT Some states used to insist you fix a sticker above the oddometer part saying original miles but I think that's gone by the board now anyway .

Who actually cares!!!! Who is ever going to know that u changed it??? I wouldnt bother. I wound my odo back to 0 when i put the rebuilt motor in.

I care, cos it's the little things like that that will matter if the car is ever sold, and if the car can be said to be unroadworthy in the event of an accident because of an aftermarket speedo.....

Anyway QLD transport says:

1) Keep the original milage figure, & the receipt from the purchase of the new speedo. These must be kept and passed on to subsequent owners.

That is it, nothing to worry about at all. Just wanted to be sure is all!

my main issue was it was going to be kind of obvious a different speedo was in the car, so easy to get pulled up on if there was a problem.

Remind me of that if I buy a car off you Hanra....personaly, I would prefer to know how far the whole car has travelled over the years...not just the current engine

Well im dam sure that in the 39 yrs that my car has been rolling around, the speedo would of clocked over at some point........ SO how would u know for sure anyways???

I wound the speedo back on my car at the same time the car was built up from a complete NUT and BOLT bare shell/bare subframes/bare metal restoration. Including a new engine.

In NSW they log the mileage at inspection time.
My speedo crapped itself one year so I got a nice new Mk2 S one from UK.
Rego was due a month later, the tester asked why it was so low, I just said `new speedo'. "Oh", he said. "OK..."

No problemo.
