I'm just playing around with a twin SU set up and a slightly lumpy set up (RE13, 1.5:1 rockers).

Now I'm on the button I believe with my carby tuning after a lot of fiddling about, the carbs aren't so easy to tune as they don't behave as obviously when using the factory methods to set the mixtures, but I have also used a Gunson Colourtune to confirm my settings.

The problem is that she is still using a little too much fuel, it stinks out the garage and the oil is going a little dark because of it passing the rings. I'm going to play with the float bowl settings tonight, but my question is: when playing with a lumpy set up, do you tend on the rich side of mixture settings at idle or the slightly lean?

cheers

Wat size is the motor? Any head mods? Wat type of inlet manifold? Wat needles are u using? Wat type of float do u have?

Im using AH2 needles on my twin 1 1/4's. I set it up at idle with my Gunsons plug, but it always needs a bit more fuel when actually under load and being driven. I had tried a 3 needles and QW's. The 3 i thought was way to rich at idle, it leaned out a little under load. But i had the same issue. Could just smell to much fuel at idle. The QW's were to lean. Could set it up at idle, but under load would break down.

Are u using a Gunsons carbalancer to balance the 2?

It's a 1330, lightly modded head, manifold by MOWOG. I've got the standard M needles at the moment.

I was thinking of chucking it on a dyno to get the exhaust emmision readings accross the rev range to try and nail it down.

Yeah the M is standard, but if anything I thought it would come up lean on the standard needles?

For sure.
I had no chance of running on M's with mine. Maybe the jet has never been centred and it has worn the needle at the base of if, causing a rich mixture at idle?
The QW's r richer then the M but leaner then the AH2. Mine was to lean with the QW's.

Mite be worth buying a kit for em and get some new jets. Maybe there is some slight wear in them as well?

Wat type of float do u have? Is it all nylon or does it have a metal strap on it?

They've got the metal straps, I might play with the float levels and see how that goes.

I just checked the float levels on Barney, he has one float with strap and one without. The strap one was a bit low. Runs lots smoother now.:)
He's running #6 needles, but they are twin HS4s & Ramflos with Unifilter foam.

With twin HS2s & Ramflos on 1100-1275s I usually find it's either M, or AH2 that work best.
If running too rich, the jets are maybe worn. Kits are not too dear now- and they include the jet.

Thanks Doc,

Jets and needles were replaced when the carbs had a complete overhaul about 8000 miles ago. They both seem fine, although the 'klink' the pistons are supposed to make is slightly different from one carb to the next, i don't know if I need to chase after that really though.

Is there any favourite height you like to use on the floats? Or just the standard heights in the manual? While I'm on this, do you simply bend the strap, or fiddle with shims to raise and lower the levels? I've always seen guys just bend the straps.

The old girl's now booked in on the dyno at D&T Wangara for this Thursday at 9 am.
I've got a few days to give the tuning my best shot.

ooooh my first Dyno. Does that make my car rice?

What's the goal if I'm gonna take home the trophy?
Do I need an EJ20 engine and AWD drivetrain?

Shame it's got all that spam all over your nice graph, it makes it hard to read.

I have the nylon needles, so i had to play around with shims. Ive got mine set midway between the 2 tolerances given in the w/shop manual. I would be having a look at the condition of the needles. If u say the klink dosnt sound the same between the 2, u may find that the jet is slightly off centre and is binding on the needle as it falls. The books that i have actually get u to measure the time taken for the piston to fall when inside the dashpot itself (removed from the carb). It should be within a certain spec. 2 far to walk to the shed to check. Maybe later on.... But that is only checking to see how free they are in the dashpot.

U guys r so lucky to have a dyno to take ur car to........ We have 3 dynos up here that i know of. 1 place told me they didnt wanna touch it, another joint never looked at the car even tho i booked it in. They just didnt get round to it and really stuffed me around. The other place ive only heard BAD stories about........

So im doomed to fiddling.......

I set them using a 3/16" drill- if it has the metal tag bend it carefully with longnose pliers. If not, shim the jet. My twin HS4s have one of each sort right now.....
