Joel,
They're talking about a chassis dyno, they drive your car onto it so the front wheels are on the dyno (two or more rolling cylinders which the wheels sit in), then drive the car through the gearbox into third gear as if it was driving on the road (where in actual fact it is just sitting there on the dyno rollers). They then rev it through the range of your engine in third gear and the dyno measures HP, torque, and road speed and can produce a graph showing how much HP the car produces at the wheels at the various engine revs.

In general terms, being revved to maximum revs under load once or twice will be no different to you flogging it on the road and infinately safer. There is always the chance that a tired engine could let go and do some damage (and they will make you sign a waiver absolving them if it does), but this is a fairly rare occurrence.

We did an ausmini dyno day last year, with a range of minis from stock to heavily modded and everyone made it through unscathed. The chances of it happening to you are very low.

It is good fun, good value for money, and safe, but you must be aware something could happen and take that in mind when deciding to have a go.

Bob - I'm a maybe, but not for the reasons above - just need to check what's on closer to the date.

This is for the Mini's Down Under Event (MDU) to be held at Penrith Panther's..there have been talks of 1500 minis attending 8)

See here:
http://www.ausmini.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=18138

It isn't bad for your engine as long as it's in good condition and generally sound. Only you can know this. Obviously there is some risk as the dyno operater will run the car through the rev range until peak power is found.

The car is monitored for air/fuel ratio and if anything looks suss (like the mixture leans out at the top end) he will stop there. You can also set a personal rev limit if you want.

You basically get to know how much power your engine is making, the air/fuel ratio throughout the range (you can see whether the mixture needs adjustment acurately) and you get a nice little printout with the data..

You also get to compare it with similar engines and guage how your's fits in..

I want in but I am not sure if the 1330 will be ready on time... My fear is that the 1152 will be out and the 1330 is not ready :?

Can I say yes and if Lillee is off the road I run Toby our Corolla Wagon instead?
