Just a quick one on torque wrenches. I am up to torquing the head nuts on the van so I got out my torque wrench. Its range is 4-20 N.M. and 40-180 lbf.in. I've had a look on the web for conversions (trying to get from the black books ft/lbs) but that didn't make much sense as it is telling me that I need a heap more lbf.in. (I thought in theory that it might be just x 12) But I'm starting to think it is correct and that I have a pissy little torque wrench too small for most jobs on the Mini. Can someone please shed some light on my dilema please?

180 lbf/ins is a whole 15 lb/ft.
As ya said, a pissy little one. good for auto tranny work, not much else....

Yep, a 'pissy little torque wrench'.
Inch/lb divided by 12 = foot/lb
Nm x 8.851 = inch/lb

The max your wrench will do is 14.75 ft/lb. (20Nm x 8.51)/12 = 14.75.

Ziff, I have a Kincrome one, 160 lbf/ft or equivalen in N/M, which I would sell- it's practically new, used only a couple of times. Done hardly any work at all.
Reason for sale- I now have a new US made Craftsman one which I prefer to use.
The Kinchromes are well over $100 now. Yours for $60.

There is a cheaper Supertool version, but I've been told the Kinchrome is better engineered in the head.

If you're interested I'll bring it on the Newcastle run.

Something is happening there on the 16th of Sept - is that it ???

Have a look in the runs/cruises section Mike. It's on in a couple of weekends and we are trying to get as many as we can to come so we can beat last years number of cars (I think 23).

I have been following the chat actually. I'm waiting for the moons to align to see if I can come. I'm half way through changing a head gasket on the van at the moment which has been a bit of fun. I'd certainly appreciate the experience of helping with the engine change even if I just pass spanners and help lift things on the day I'll see if I can make it and let you know as soon as I can.

I wanted to keep the numbers manageable and with respect that we are in somebody elses house and yard. However, with Aaron and Doggie as well as others it is the opportunity for a workshop in a workshop. So to speak.

It open to others in the Hunter region. Just have them come through me so that we dont have people standing on the daffodils in the front garden trying get a glimpse of Doogie *lol*

Fair enough. If your interested in the Newcastle Mini run, and can get away from the farm two weekends in a row, drop a line to Graham or Alf. They are the blokes organising it and have put heaps of time into making it a great weekend.

Ziffle...mate....take that toy one back to the clockwinders and go and borrow a decent one from the sumpies or framies (the bonus will be that you will know it is in calibration)
