Hi,

This has probably been covered many times but I can't seem to find a solution to my problem.

I have an 0-8000 2 " rev counter I got to put in my moke but i can't get it to function. It says on the back 4 6 cylinder and has 2 wires lighjt green and dark blue coming out the back. One is designated -'ve the othe +'ve. No bulb - looks like externally illuminated. When I hook it up to live of the fuse box and -'ve side of coil all it does is hover at 6000 rpms. Put your foot on the accelerator and it doesn't move or waver from that. Reverse the wires and you get it pumping and jerking on 0 revs ??

Is the gauge any good or is it positive earth and not meant for minis. Got me baffled...

maybe put the black earth wire onto a bit of bare metal somewhere and see if that fixes it, that is a very basic wireing setup for a tacho though

Thats whats got me further mystified. Only the light green and blue wires. Tried running a wire from body of car to body of gauge to try and earth it but that did nothing...

Does it have a switch to say whether it's a 4 or 6 cyl? If not, usually the different coloured wires distinguish between the cylinders. My guess is the green is for 4 cyl, only 'cos mine was green for 4 cyl.

Me thinks you have put 12 volts directly across the rev counter. It now masquerading as a voltmeter.
Try -ve to ground and +ve to the +ve side of the coil. This should work if all is well with the rev counter

Failing that try -ve side of coil and +ve as well, but I doubt that would work.

Often they have a third wire for a pulse sense, in this case it would go to the coil and the -ve and +ve to normal ground point and fuse box.

I think Marvins diagram solves the wiring problem but will test it out tonight. It says stenciled on the back "4 6 cylinder". so that would gibe with the green and blue only in the back of the rev counter I have. does that meen then that the -'ve and +'ve are hooked to the poles of the holder bracket??

You reckon that is freaky, you posted a response to my post before i even posted !
Strange days.....

Just to any old twelve volts, ignition barrel is closest, fuse box is a little further away if you can manage it. Make sure it switches on and off with the ignition switch or you will drain your battery.

I've got a Speco tacho and there were 4 bolts coming out of the rear of it, 2 for the bracket, 1 power and 1 earth.

What brand is yours and do you have any pics?
