have been offered 1973 Clubman Gt but not sure that it has the correct motor how do I identify it is correct Thanks

1. Chassis number - right-hand side of engine bay, right next to the radiator.

2. Engine number - stamped into right-hand side of the engine, underneath the water temp sensor, near the spark plugs.


Tell me those two things, and I'll tell you.


EDIT: The chassis number should start off with YG2S8, if I'm correct. And if its the original enigne, the engine number should start off with 1200.

Engine has been changed then.
Early Oz GT ones were 9F/XE/Y, then 1200.

Your 12H or 12G? is a UK made motor.

Doc as usual is right but as the asker is from NZ it could well be a English GT and while I know the Aussie GT I have no idea about the pomgollia ones except they never had the real S b;ock in there's

I'm assuming that when he said the chassis number was correct he meant it had "YG2S8" as the prefix.

It could be anything as he has not said what the chassis no is so for all we know it could be anything but Aussie GTs were not sent to NZ and they are very scarce on the ground over there, most GTs over there are english imports, its very rare to see a Aussie GT in NZ but having said that there has been one for sale on trade me the last few weeks

They were indeed sent over here. Apparently they were better sellers here than in Aus and I've been told (source invovled in Motoring press here and in Sydney) that more of the 1000 odd cars were sold in NZ than in Aus. Not too sure about this claim, although when I owned my first GT (mid 70's) there were plenty of them on the roads in Auckland - I always seemed to be waving to other GT's I'd see - let alone the rest of NZ.

The majority of car's engine number was 1206/XXXX. These were the 1100S block cars. As this car is a 73, it should have the 1206 prefix.

They are rare here now, just as in Aus.

So you guys only got the 1100s type blocks ( same as our 1275 moke of 72 have been told these were sourced from South Africa) in the cars and were they assembled over there from CKD kits

No - got the lot. In fact I owned a centre ignition, v early one but in the ignorance of youth, sold it on after a couple of years! Wish I knew then what I know now. There was a steady stream of them all through production. I mentioned the 1206 number because of all of the ones I know of now, only 2 have the 1200/ engine number. I gues these suffered the same fate as in Aus - into a shed as a GT and out again a few months later as 'genuine roundnose Mk 2 Cooper S's.

I have also been told of the Seth Afrikan heritage of the 1100S blocks. Can't confirm or deny this.

the south african type blocks are very different to normal 1100 and 1275 blocks as the oil filter is on the right hand side the casting number for them is a GF1.

AS for a 1200 number then i had one and sold it on to a friend of mine who now has it. It has a EN40B crank and is a full cooper S motor the car is still in good condition and he loves driving it every day.

Most of the GT is this country are NZ sepc GTs and are not quite the smae as the UK spec or even the south african spec GT or GTS.

If chassis is YG2S8 / #### and engine number is 12G or 12H, it simply sounds like an Aussie GT with a replacement engine. You can expect after 35 years a car might have had a replacement motor fitted. Especially if previous owners were not aware of the uniqueness of an Aussie GT.

If you want that totally original car, leave that one and wait. They are out there.
