the engine number is police i think but it is a 1275 you can tell by the head bolts & thermosate housing bolts if there in line with the head bolts then its 1275 cooper.

i dont get the 'police' bit and is it true that it's a 1275???

Cheers James

If its a pommie engine - regardless of size - it will have its engine number on an alloy tag pop rivitted onto the block in the normal engine place. This is unacceptable to Australian authorities who demand the number is stamped into the block. The alloy tags dont survive a chemicla dip for reconditioning either.

So - when a car hits the registration authorities with either a pommie number or no number then a new number must be issued and stamped into the block. It used to be a police function to issue these numbers hence the term police number. Each state has a different prefix or code. Once a number is in the system the engine can be used but their is no code to denote engine capacity etc. Its just a number issued in sequence by the police. The previous number issued could have been issued on a Volvo motor and the next number issued could have been on a Holden motor. .

Now as for size - generally speaking you can spot a 1275 engine by the distance between the thermostat housing and the rocker cover. Its a full finger distance apart where as a small bore motor has next to no distance apart.

Beware though, it is possible to fit big bore heads onto small bore motors.

Does it have inspection covers for the lifters at the rear of the engine? All non Cooper S 1275's dont have inspection covers, as far as im aware?
