BACKGROUND to the story wrote:
So the alternator light kept coming on whislt i was driving at night
but day time was alright

anyway, if i rev her up past two and a half, the light goes off.

I was sick of doing that, so then i took my car to the auto electrician (the guy who i always go to, who i thought was a good bloke) ....

I took the alternator there LAST year in may. for a "recondition" because i had a few dramas. And this time he looked at it, and says that a screw came loose and f**ked up the insides up of the alternator.
Which means he did a crap job last year, doesnt it?
He opened it up and showed me what was wrong, and said that the bracket was f**ked and and really pushed me to get him to rebuild and for him to source all the parts etc...
but said the parts were really difficult to source, and said it would take ages to do and that it would cost a fair bit. (fair bit meaning 350+)
He said he only has 6 months warranty on all his work, but i would have thought the "reconditoned" alternator would have lasted longer than that.

I said i did not want him to do it and that I would find another alternator myself.
so he put the alternator back together, and now it doesnt work - at all.
so the battery juice is just getting sucked.

anyway, i think he thinks i am a dumb female that he can take advantage of and eat my bank account up. (yeah, sure i may not know much about cars, but i like to think i know a lot of other things :))

I hate him.

Betty is now a lawn ornament, and I am very dissatisfied.

(sorry to butter it all out)..

but what I am really getting at, is that ..
i need an alternator,
or something. or a nicer local (Parramatta-ish) auto electrician who wont be a ning nong about the situtation.. or somebody who knows anyhtng about alternators...

Does yours have an internal regulator? If your not sure have a look at the wires connected, If it's 1 fat & 1 skinny then its internal. If it has 1 fat and about 3 skinny it's external.

Alternators are really not a problem.
A guy on here (convertible_minis or something is his nick) sells a rover alternator which he advertises as a "bolt on" kit. Otherwise brickworx or minisport or maybe even karcraft and heritageMG (both in Sydney) can get you a new or used unit. The going price on ebay and from suppliers for a rebuilt Lucas 45amp unit with an internal regulator is approx $150. You auto elec. is a cock.

You can also convert a Bosch one (theres a guide I wrote awhile ago) but with the new units as cheap and readily available as they are its realy not worth it imao.

I'm with Mike. Just buy a brand new one. No drama, not much damage to the hip pocket (or purse in your case, if that's what you prefer), and they are easy to get a hold of. I remember Cono at Minicraft telling me that they just aren't worth dismantling; may as well get a new one.
