Whilst it wasn't appropriate in this case (bores full of oil and enging on ground etc) a better way of separating a head from the block (with the engine in the car) is to simply give the solenoid a couple of clicks so the engine turns. The compression will separate the two.

Levering away with screw drivers can scratch head and block surfaces whilst bashing with a hammer may break something. I am like lightening with a hammer in my hand. I never can hit the same place twice.

It was really easy once everything eas undone. I like this little engine it so easy to work on. :P
