Some of you will know what this is about.

I am trying to figure out how much vibration is normal in the early Remote gearshift lever, the ones with no vibration damper.

Alternatively, what about in a remote gearshift with a Kad Quickshift fitted?

Motor is a 1310.

I think that the standard shift has an acknowledged problem in that regard. The works team used to put foam rubber over the gearshift in an effort to absorb some of the vibration.

I've not used a quickshift, but my guess would be that it is the same if not slightly worse.

I didn't know there was a difference between remote changes...

which bit is the vibration damper in a non-early remote change? is it the spring under the plate that screws on? or the plastic thingy at the end of the stick?

mine hardly vibrates at all - not noticably anyway

Mk2 S & Mini-K, also early Clubby had a 2 piece lever with rubber damper bush halfway down the stick.
Barney has that, no vibes. Ha-Ha has a Mini Deluxe (ie early) one piece stick, no vibes either!

The key to no vibes I find is no slack in the linkage.
If shafts or bushes are worn, replace them- if balls are worn hardface the wear spots and polish them to round again.

There is also a brass spring loaded pin in the side of the remote, below gearlever ball- if this wears out i guess vibes might result.
Ditto the split nylon bush on top of the ball, replace if worn.

re the nylon bush on end of stick, if worn that can rattle- I hear a Fosters beer can shim wrapped around cures that one.

unfortunately they rattle something fierce,
try removing the nylon seat for the spring, and fitting another spring on the bottom end where the knob inserts into the cup

yeah mine still rattles a little though

To cure the dreaded gear stick sizzle on a remote change, insert a Morris Monor front trunnion bush. It fits on the lower end of the stick (beolow the pivot ball) hat brim down. Unfortunately the Quikshift is too long for this to work..

My remote shift rattles like crazy. I recently took the remote extension etc off and cleaned it all up. I pretty much tracked the rattle down to the 'ball end lever crank' and 'pivot pin' which appear to be very sloppy. Its basically the little linkage part that is attached to the gearbox not the extension and hangs down like a tail with a ball on the end. It's held in by a shaft which is held into the gearbox by a couple of split pins. I'm not sure if its the shaft or the bush in the linkage is worn and I dont know if they can be removed with the motor in or not.

I am currently using an occy strap between the seat bracket to the gear lever to keep things quiet.

Yes the balls of the bellcrank wear fore and aft to an oval shape.
Also the ball on the remote change shaft (22) gets 2 flats on the side.
I've successfully built these balls up with nickel electrode (used for cast iron welding) and polished them back to size on a linisher. That was 12 years ago, they are still good.
Use the hole in the remote change shaft as a gauge.

Can also be done by brazing them up with nickel bronze rod, it work hardens nicely.

I fitted the trunnion bush Ian speaks of, it cost $2.50. The problem has been completely solved and I love the new non-rattle gearchange. I really reccomend giving this a go as it is so cheap and the result is excellent.

so sick of a rattling gearstick

Well poor old Morris stick is in a bad way..so once I get what I need I'll do a How Too..

I striped the two scews on top...so I swaped it around with another piece from Marcia...Stick has gotten worse..Yep the Nulon bush needes replacing and I can't get one from KC or Padstow.

I have the end one but I think I have the 27 & 28 problem and bushes (only when the engine out apparently)

Didnt reliase thier was a spring with the Nulon Cup also

If you add the trunnion bush it goes over the bottom part of the gearstick, so it pushes down on the shift socket in the remote.
Pull stick out, fit trunnion bush, refit.

Yup, it works so good I actually stare at the gearstick enjoying the utter silence.

Ahhhh nothing to listen to but the wonderful exhaust note and the other half dozen rattles....
