The trick is to find (usually through recommendations) a really good mechanic. I don't have time or the skills or the time to learn the skills to work on motors - other stuff I can usually do, but sometimes I off-load that too, because I trust Laurie. He's just your neighbourhood mechanic, has two junior mechanics but all good guys. And while Laurie isn't a specific Mini mechanic, he's old enough to have worked on plenty. For example, in doing the warrant of fitness recently, he noted that there were too many threads showing on the rubber cross UJ joint bolts, and said I should source some as they'd need replacing soon.

And once you've found one really good mechanic, he'll have (or should have) the connections for other specialists - Laurie knew exactly who to do the gearbox on our Clubman Estate. He'll also do his best to save me money, for example getting me to do the legwork.

The problem is finding a local guy who other people trust. Ask around?

I fully agree, my dad's land rover mechanic is good, decent and won't ripp ya off. He'll take a while. My dad gave him his mini, he didn't get it back quicly as the mechanic wanted to get accusomed to the mini as he hadn't worked on an a-series in a long time. But in the end a british car is a british car with all the lucas and smiths and austin stuff!

Its a realy good trick too if you can find one.

...or Lube Mobile?

Again its the mechanic not the company your after to work on your car. Best mates a Lubie mech. (No.1 Qld) and he tells me some cracker storys from both sides of the fence. (Audi A4 Turbo, 40k no servicing & why's it broken?)
But in the end if your unhappy with this guys work don't go back and tell your mates that their crap
