I am guessing that the number wasn't on the shroud on these really early models. It just doesn't have any sign of a number there.

Yes , early 60's mini's had the body number stamped on the firewall near the plate's location behind the master cylinders . Not sure when they moved them to the radiator shroud .

I had mine done the other month. They make sure the number on the vin plate matches the number on the rad shroud. If they don't it may or may not be a drama. Mine didnt match. they had to do a search and find out what numbers on the car had been used by and the history. They gave me a letter and said I was ok as both numbers are clean.

yeah vic has become tighter than a fish's rectum. if you dont have the number on the car AND the previous rego number, they will say that it is not proven it is an australian made car or not imported. i was told to prove it even though it says on the plate "made by leyland motors australia. but due to no previous rego number, they dicked me round. also, the desk jockeys will tell you you need the previous number etc, call the melb department, and they say no you dont, so hope your vic roads centre is loose.

My VIN plate and body number is on the wiper motor side of the fire wall. This is unusual but, I was going through a wreckers and saw a rusted out 1962 850 and it had its VIN plate and body number is the same place as mine.

Early 850's also had the Car Number stamped on the rear floor panel behind the drivers seat. Have a look there!

When i whent to register my first mini the car was missing the VIN number totaly. It was on the plate but not on the shroud.

It wasn't a problem, they made me go to an authrised engineer and have a new number stamped. So even if they dont let you register with that number they cna actually give you a new number. As for the hole in the firewall as long as its sealed and provides a physical barrier it should be fine.
