Gday, I have been thinking of taking the mini over the nullarbor to SA for a while now, anyone have any tips for things that i should check before doing so. I have a 67 Deluxe with an 1100S 1275.

A group of our local Minis are currently holidaying in Tassie. They freighted their cars to Adelaide and proceeded to the Apple Isle. Their return will be all the way back across the nullabor. Will post a report and pics when they return. Also a group of WA Mokes successfully crossed Oz for this years Muster..... and returned too They had a ball ........ best advice ...... preparation ! Dont leave anthing to chance.

I thought about this as well for when I leave in 4 weeks, I definitely will be doing the run from Melbourne to Nowra in January in the Mini though. The problem I have is the remoteness of it all, on the Hume you are basically in mobile range the whole way and with hundreds of people to call if you need too, not really a valid point on the Nullabor...so I'm too chicken to do it.

Work out a safe way to carry extra fuel, if you hit strong headwinds (should be alright going west to east as it should be a tailwind mostly but if not ...) your fuel economy will drop and servo's are a fair distance apart . Take plenty of spares (oil , oil filter , fuel filter , fuel hose , heater hose , fanbelt , bypass hose , top and bottom hose , plugs , points and leads etc) but also give it a thorough check over first . Also take a good , long tow rope , if the worst does happen you can normally get a tow from someone , providing you've got a good tow rope .

Ok thanks for all the tips, I think I will go around the 25th of november. I dunno what sort of fuel economy i'm getting at the moment but plan to work it out when i go over to the rally next weekend, which will be sweet. I have most of those spares listed from doing the jobs already, so I will take all of them over along with plenty of water, fuel and oil

See if you can find out how far the biggest gaps between servo's is and make sure you've got a spare hundred or so klms worth of fuel if not more . Let us know how the planning and the trip goes .

Last year a group of us went over to Hay(NSW).
We put our Minis on the Vehicle Train transporter(TNT Kewdale).Cost $125.00 to Adelaide.
Then got on the plane(appox$300.00) and arrived in Adelaide to collect the Minis.Got a taxi out to Depot and drove off to our destination.This worked out cheaper than driving across,and saved us the 3 day drive across.
Unless you really want to drive(for the experience) this may be a better option

wow, that sounds really good actually. TNT you say, the mini's got over to adelaide alright? Not that mine is worth much anyway. I still get to drive 500kms to mount gambier after adelaide and if im desperate to drive the nullarbor i can do so on the way back. Thanks LS1380, your a champ.

When the sign says "next service 525Km" or what ever BELEIVE IT - there will be NOTHING not even a bark hut till you get there. If you are under 3/4 full at a servo - fill up cause you can't conserve fuel by rolling down hills - there aren't any!!! Don't stop for MOD EDIT people and enjoy the ride

That road is good for stamps, you sure don't do it because of the scenery.

Only mildly better than the road through the Pilbarra IMHO.

i heard about a really bad accident along the lines of this, the rope snapped at the towing cars end, went under the wheels of the car being towed.

Driving accross the Nullarbor in a mini is a must!!!! Its a long way though so do as sports850 says and carry extra fuel, oil and the usual spares... I did it just before xmas a few years ago and took it easy..sat on about 90 all the way and only needed to go to the backup fuel once... carried a 20L container. ALSO take more water than you think you will need at leats 10L as you never know... there are lots of places to stop and get help if you really need to and they are not really that far apart but in a mini youonly have so much feul!! I think every Aussie should go accross at least once... the scenery in F*****G amazing.... go off road when you see signs for lookouts when near the Bight.

Where abouts in Adelaide?

I'm just stopping through adelaide and gawler, but then going down to mount gambier, which is where im from. Can't wait, gotta get through uni exams first though
