Out of curiosity does this "high vaccum" cause a rise on the idle of the motor when warm?
Just wondering why my idle rises up to over 2000 when the motor warms up

Do you have a brake booster? Mine broke due to some kind of crazyness the idle was dropping when i put my foot on the brakes, You see the people who tuned my car didn't tell me and put the idle up high so when warm it would see 2000 but would drop to 900 when brakes applied, only when hot as thats when no choke is on etc. I reckon I had a pretty unique problem, all fixed now, but just a suggestion.

Running straight into a modified cannister. And yes it does get smelly at the traffic lights
Cannister does need to be emptied,as it builds up to a yellowish mushy muck after awhile.

I stopped the smells by running a hose out between the rad and rad shield. Blows the fumes out with the air from the fan.

On a leyland isn't that illegal as your emmission system no longer does anything?

I've got those little chrome breather things on both crankcase and back oil thing. Yes they are useless but dam do they look good! 8) And since in 1964 I don't need emissions crap and since I don't do trackstuff yet my oil can fly out anywhere! :D

Please could someone inform me is there any practical reason for venting the engine back into the manifold. I have just vented my rocker cover and clutch cover to a catch tank. Is this bad for a road car or is it just a preference thing?

It's for emmisions laws, it makes the engine consume all the nasty gasses from the crankcase.

Couldn't you run the other side of the cannister(the outlet) to your carb? the fitting is there to connect it to in front of the SU bowl with teh rubber bung over it isn't it. The oil should have been seperated by then?

The fuel tank breather also vents into the cannister

The fuel tank also vents to the float bowl on the carb too via the fuel pump and the fuel filter :D

Late model clubbies vented the tank to the cannister and then to the carb as well. It's pretty well nothing but vapour fumes anyway.

P.S. that is a very nice engine bay

So you're saying I could connect the hole circled to the carb manifold?

Crankcase breathers should never be run into the charcoal canister. They are not a catch tank.
All you will do is oil up the activated charcoal (if any is left after 30 years) and make a mess of the firewall.
The canister is designed to deal with hydrocarbon fumes from the fuel tank, float bowl etc, that is all. Air goes from it INTO the rocker cover, then fumes generated in motor get sucked through whatever PCV system is fitted- either a Smiths valve on the manifold or into the Vac port on side of SU.

<edit> that hole in the bottom is supposed to be open....

EDIT: that explains it then... :)

Where can I get charcoal to put in the cannister?

I'm guessing the charcoal cannister is pretty empty now though isn't it?

DrMini...thought that might be the case.

I guess I should get a PCV valve :D
When I bought my clubby (with safety cert) it didn't have a PCV or charcoal canister.

Them's racin fumes!

How about the best of both: an oil catch can and connect it to the PCV valve?

I was considering connecting a PCV to the filter on this,:
