Can't drive dellorto's like an On/Off switch  I dunno what went wrong but I know that when I drive her she is fine.

Anyway the dellorto and manifold is out of the car and a few other bits and pieces. I will have to post the engine bay before and after pics and post them up. There's SOO much work to be done there that I'm not quite sure were to start! :?

Oh well she will look like a million dollars after that so have to believe in the end result to stay motivated :)

She's on the Dyno!

Handsome looking thing aint she?

Would have run it today but this got in the way:

It's a FORD DBA (Belt Drive Assembly), twin overhead cam, 16valve 1.6L engine that got a whopping 260hp on the dyno at 9000rpm! These heads were used on Formula 1 cars back in the day.

Graham says these can go into Minis and that kits are sold in the UK to bolt them onto mini gearboxes   :o

Only problem is that this engine here (as you see it) is worth about $40,000-$50,000!!!

I SO WANT ONE! :P Sounds like an F1 car funnily enough 8)

It's a rather impressive engine. Way ahead of it's time for the time. I mean today's engines run 4 valves per cylinder just like 1960's F1 cars. So in 2040 we will be running hydraulic valve cars that rev to 18000rpm

F1 cars have pneumatic valve `springs', not hydraulic...

You reckon will we have engines that require values in 2040? Or be able to afford hydrocarbons to burn in them? :D

Come to think of it, will you be driving in 2040? Will you still be alive?
:D

113hp! :D :D :D

I am very very happy with the results! She pulls strongly from around 3000, reaching max torque just above that about 3500. 97ft/lbs all the way to 6500...

With Supa Pipes she did even better at 114hp and 104 ft/lbs! plus had a big 5ft/lb edge all the way up to 6500.

34mm vs 36mm was worth a puny 2-3hp only which was surprising. I think the biggest downfall as graham says is the redline intake. Although it is fully ported it is still the wrong shape and length.

As graham says I can easily extract a further 10-15ft/lbs if I adopted both the supa pipes and a GR long intake but that would mean roughly $1000 worth of gear and MASSIVE modification of Lillee's firewall, for about 15hp which works out to be about $67 per horse!!!

Maybe next rebuild when I am prepared to hack Lillee up :?  mmm 130hp  :P (Listen to me! I have 113hp today and I am already drooling at the future prospect of 130hp  )

Dyno today was long, hot and tiring but worth while. I can now throw the engine straight in without needing to run it in or anything like that. Can take it to 6500rpm on day 1 which is a huge bonus!

To give you an idea of how hot things got, check this out:

Red Hot Pipes!!!

The number 113

Graham ran car number 13 for years and when he got back into historic racing someone else was given the number 13 :( So instead he ran car number 113! so for me to get this hp is an auspicious occasion! *insert twilight zone music*

Well now that the engine is complete, I have a big job ahead of me. Take the old engine out, strip it back to bare metal and respray it all... I am not looking forward to it!!! I will update you all in the upcoming weeks.

I want to thank Kevin (aka DrMini) for all of his help, couldn't have done it without you! you're a legend! You inspired me to get into minis.

Thanks also to Pete (Pristic) for morale support and bagering to keep me wanting to try harder to beat his ass :P

And A HUGE thank you to Graham Russel. This man is a downright legend, a good friend and also bloody good at what he does! he's such a humble and friendly guy, his knowledge is far beyond a library of books and his work ethic is inspiring. The most astounding thing about the man is his passion. Even after all these years of tuning, racing, running and building minis (amongst other things) he is still like a school kid when it comes to minis! He honestly just loves doing it! It's no wonder his engines come out so good!!!

I got so much more out of this project than I ever hoped for! I learnt SO much and have enjoyed it thoroughly. It is so easy when you have the teachers that I do!!!

Watch this space for more updates! thanks to everyone who has helped me out along the way and for reading!!! I enjoyed writing more than you have enjoyed reading by far!
