does'nt really cost much for the 2.7 ratio but its hard to find one and putting it in is a bugger. there is a bit of machining to do as well so installing would be pricey. its a engine out job
while mine was out i put a new cross pin diff in. its all worth it though and it really doesnt affect takeoff that much, its a bit easier to control wheel spin lol    :P

well its not the easiest of jobs you have to pull the motor and box out, u dont have to split the box and motor but u will need a really long socket to get the pinion out if u do it without spliting the motor and box.
u get to the nut that holds the pinion on by taking the speedo drive housing cover off, once u
have that of u have to take the bearing retainer out and machine it so it fit over the 2.7 pinion
(as it is bigger that the 3.44 pinion) ant the re-assemble) easy done. hope this helps

3.44 with a 1275 is a good even combo. 100 k's at bit under under 4000 rpm, which is fine. It's certainly not too high for cruising on a long trip. Hay to adelaide at 110? Not a problem! For 1100 I reckon 3.44 would also be fine with the torque and all. A stock 998 or 850 I dunno, I've never driven one! But for those, I'd go 3.76, just my opinion tho. About 3.44, My cars got plenty of go, 3.44 is great! Only if you have normal gearbox (99.99% chance you do) if you got close ratio, 1st gear will be very long! But otherwise just go 3.44

When I upgraded my Mini SS from a 998 to 1100 I had a 2.9 diff installed. From memory that required a little grinding for the crown wheel to fit where the 3.44 item had been. The motor had a 12G295 head with rimflow style valves and a 1.5 SU on a metro water-heated manifold. Not a real hotty, but more power than standard. Anyway the higher gearing made it just magic for long distance driving and the car was also a lot quieter. Not something I'd do on a race car, but I'd definitely recommend that combination on a road car.

One thing to point out is that the 20% change in gearing makes your speedo awfully innacurate. I found that the Marina used the same gauges as the Clubman, but had a 200kmh top speed in place of the 160kmh Mini version. I grabbed one of these from Pick-A-Part and was able to simply swap the face plates over to give a nearly perfect match. Certainly close enough to mid 1970's speedo tolerances.

4000 rpm for that long cant be good for a mini engine surely, my 1100 is really working at that many revs, do you really think it would last like thaT?
