just was setting up my insurance..and cos ive got 12" wheels the excess will be double (500 instead of 250) and the total cost is like 100 bucks more a year than my Nissan NX

whats the big deal about having 12" wheels

I dont know what car you exactly have but if your car came with 10" wheels from the factory then its a modification. Hence the price hike. Although I dont know why it would such difference perhaps someone here can shed more light on the subject.

some systems operate on a modified/non modified basis, so as soon as you have one modification (i.e. anything that you could not have fitted from the factory) then the system will just bump it up.

Because if they find out, your insurance claim is invalid, including the third party costs for the BMW you side-swiped (hypothetically speaking). If an insurance company can get out of paying out on a claim, they will.

It's your risk, but a friend had his 2 year old SUV rolled by someone who wasn't covered to drive it - no insurance. And it should be borne in mind that insurance companies will lodge that debt with you until you can pay it, unless you declare yourself bankrupt.

The upshot is it's much easier to keep it legal than to try and save a hundred dollars - it's a running cost after all. (You can tell I'm over 35, can't you )

The insurers do require you to disclose any driving offences or insurance claims in the past 5 years but dunno how much of a difference it makes to your premium. In my case both with Shannons and Vigyl having had 2 speeding tickets with loss of points didnt affect the quote at all. But it might be an issue where there've been more serious offences.

Someone on here asked one time why number plates were obscured in ebay adverts etc.
There was a discussion and it came out that although RTA and Police had to account for every computer search they did on car details, insurance companies had virtually the same access to car and driver details and were not accountable.

So I guess if thats true - then the declared bit is just a statement of honesty - they already know.
