Oooo my favourite topic!

Castrol Edge 25W50 (formerly known as Formula R). It's the best stuff...

HPR is too thick for a new engine, I wouldn't bother until you have 100,000 miles on the clock and she's smoking/leaking oil.

I will be running Castrol.

For running in I run what Graham Russell swears by which is KMart's own KMX. At $14 for 6L it's a bargain buy. He uses it to run in all sorts of engines and has had no problems with it (that $50,000 Ford BDA motor included). It has a "Turbo Car" rating on the bottle and for any oil to have this it has to pass stringeant tests.

What Kmart does is it buys up the remaining reserves from big companies and puts in it's own additives (not friction modified) and the overall end product is very good.

I will most likely run KMX for the first few thousand miles. The stuff aint bad I must admit...

Yes, GR recommends KMX. (K-Marts 'own' label but with good stuff inside)

Wasabipimninja, you said everything is new in this motor, right? Who built it? You or a shop?? get what the shop recommends if it was...

Peter.

He uses KMX (it's made by Shell) for running in and power runs on the dyno, not sure what's in his road car- but he recommends Castrol 25W/50 (Formula R / Edge) for track use.

I ran a Franklins brand 20/50W oil in a mini for a year. It was quite good and only $11 for 5L. Nice gear changes. No burning at all. Oils IS oils IMHO......

So my new engine is built and ready bar a few bits and pieces down at the chromers. Everything in it is new and now comes the big decision, Which oil to use?

I was thinking being an older engine something in the 20w-50 range would be best. I'm not going to run my oil cooler (unless I find out I need to), and I wont be revving it too hard untill I get hold of a set of worthy rockers.

Just looking for some opinions of what types of oils and what weights people use. Synthetic or not etc.

Cos as we all know, Oils aint oils.

I and others use this :D
Street or closed events.

Good stuff. Sorry about this topic being covered before, wasn't really thinking when I posted.

Thanks for all the info, I've had a read through the other stuff as well now.

I also had a long chat with the guy who built my engine about this topic as well, and he has recommended Penzoil 25w 50 (what he runs in his Mini).

LS1380: That's a pretty speccy looking drum of oil :P What's that worth a drum? Do you have to buy it from the depot?

Buy in drum for about $130 or 5L plastic container from servo.

For running in opil I have been recommended to use the castrol HPR30.

Remember, to a lot of folk cheap oil is good cos it saves them a penny or two, but the real test of wether an oil is any good is how much it protects your engine from wear. With that in mind, the only way to know for sure would be to test various engines of the same type under the same load for 100000 k's or so, then check for wear.

If you haven't run your motor on a cheap ass oil for 100000+ k's then had it dismantled and inspected for wear, you cannot comment that it is 'just as good' as a dearer oil, and vice versa.

However, for the extra piece of mind, and the knowledge that I KNOW what is going into the motor, i will continue to use Castrol Edge.

Recommended to me by countless mechanics who specialise in minis, who drive minis, who race minis.

Cheers
Matt

(PS Bad headache, me grouchy!)

I thought GR used KMX oil not just for running in.

I'd recommend Castrol edge (the one for big bore engines), I've used Valvoline and noticed a significant improvement (especially with the gear change) with Castrol.

As GT said, do a search on "Oil", there is over an hour's worth of reading material on topic.

Agreed, XLD makes gear changes crap!

Haha you really need the 'big bore' stuff don't ya :P

KMX oil is not bad at all. If you have to use a cheap oil for budget purposes, you can't go past this oil for $14 for 6L...

I got 8 bottles of formula R 25W50 before it went to Edge for about $27 a bottle so I can't complain. That's roughly 2 years worth

Other than being on sale as a sell out...."Why???"

There is no difference in the old castrol formula R and the new Edge other than the packaging!!

i know that! that's why i bought 8 bottles! $27 a bottle vs $38 a bottle 1 week later, different name, same stuff!

I doubt Edge will ever be about $27 ever, not esp now that they have to pay for their million $ ad campain
