I own a 72 Clubbie and dont know which fuel to use. I've recently had the block rebored to +040 and had the head done, new "s" clutch etc, and dont know what fuel to use.

I've used standard Unleaded and it goes ok, I've also used Premium and it goes better.

Should I be using valve additives as well?

I use BP Ultimate (98 RON) with the Flashlube additive

In my Mini (stock 1098) I used standard unleaded and Flashlube.
Did you get the valve seats replaced when "doing" the head? In this case, the Flashlube may be not required...
But this is one of those Ausmini topics where holy war is allowed

Ask whoever has done the work on the engine whether hardened valve seats were fitted and what the compression is like. Use flashlube if no hardened seats and 98RON if the copression has been raised.

Okay - let the holy war begin

The A series engine is just simply too old in design to run happily on standard fuel and there is definate evidence that you will destroy a head if you dont use use an additive or a catalyst.

You could go chasing advance curves on distributors to suit our terrible fuels but the motor will probably still ping and knock.

I dont play russian roulette games with my cars - I use premium fuel and additive on my 1310 mini, 1100s and the 308 tonner - just cannot afford another engine at present. The only engines running straight standard are the VN crummy and the honda type engines (generator, shearing plant and firefighter) that were designed for it.
